35 Gables Bus Drivers Cited For Safety Record

Thirty-five drivers for the Coral Gables Bus System have driven a total of 469,132 safe miles without an aviodable accident, within the last six months. Twenty-seven of these men are full-time drivers and were awarded $25 U.S. Savings Bonds for their careful driving Wednesday at a safety meeting at City Hall. The other men were all part time drivers and although had no unavoidable accidents, are not elegible for the award. What determines an "unavoidable accident"? A board composed of city employes reviews the circumstances of any accidents the company employes might be involved in. It is this board which decides whether the driver was or was not able to do anything to avoid the accidents. Drivers who received their bonds from Lee Davis, City Transportation Director, were: John Black, Currie Cull, Francis Jilcoyne, James Jilcoyne, Donald Lathiam, Frank Lovejoy, David Mims. Earl Terry, Carl Tipton, Gordon Cates, Charles Chandler, Lionel Chase, Archie Creel, Thomas Hall Jr., Thomas Hanson, William Leverington. Issac Little, Ralph Muir, William Passmore, Melvin Peel, Turman Sanderslin, Robert Shepard, Robert Souther, Merrill Spurbeck, Charles Stalvey, Homer Trudeau, and Winnett Wright. The eight part time safe drivers were Richard Clements, Paul Franklin, Luther Langford, Angelo Shieffi, Eugene Goosley, Earl Hover, James Langford, and Albert Laurti. Based on the National Safety Council statistics for bus operation the city of Coral Gables accident rate for the year of 1960 was lower than the national average for the years 1956 through 1959.
