Her Sons Carried Papers, Now Diversified Investors

By HELEN REYNOLDS Times Society Editor Mrs. J. R. Matthews, 1235 Catalonia Ave., firmly believes in newspaper carrier boys. She is the mother of three ns, now grown, married and all good business men. Each carried papers as growing boys. "My boys earned salesman-ship by being newspaper car-riers. Not only, did they carry papers, but they sold the Sat-urday Evening Post and the Ladies Home Journal to regu-lar customers. "One time, when they all me down with the mumps, I delivered their magazines — all 140 of them and collected a nickel or a dime per (in those days the Post cost a nickel) to boot." The "boys" are Roswell Cor-nell Matthews, Frederick C. Matthews and Charles E. Mat-thews. When Roswell went into the Army he called himself "Ros-coe" in place of Roswell. Said he, "You couldn't get by with a name like Roswell in the Army." "That was newspaper sales-manship," his mother said. Mrs. Matthews firmly be-lieves in teenagers working at something before or after school. She told of a prank conceiv-ed in the mind of some teen-ager who had nothing better to do which turned into a cost-ly ($87) repair job. Seems that, Roscoe had a Lincoln when he still lived at home, and one morning when he went out to start the car, it didn't respond. He called a service man who came and investigated. Seems some joker had cut garden hose in foot long pieces and pushed it into the gas tank so hard that the garage man had to cut a large hole in tank to retrieve it. The other two boys, Fred-erick C. and Charles E., are district managers and Roscoe is zone manager of Investors Diversified Services Inc. Their father is division manager. He has been in the business 39 years and moved up from state manager in Louisiana. "When we lived in New Or-leans, the boys were young then and they would beg me to go wild berry hunting or craw fishing," Mrs. Matthews said, "and I was always ready to go with them. They did what they wanted and have never regretted it." We sat in Mrs. Matthews' comfortable side porch while we chatted. She waved her hand toward the porte-cochere, and called my attention to her hundreds of African violets, each in its little pot. "Keeps me busy," she said. "See that old fly boat' back there? It belongs to Frederick, but he doesn't want it at his home, for fear the kids would tear it to pieces."
