M.O.W.W.s Determined Flag Wavers

"Call the M. O. W. W. 'flag wavers' if you wish but we are determined to bring back to Miami some old fashioned patriotism," was the opening remark made by the former Lieut. Commander Edward B. Hollingsworth, 8345 SW 158th Street. He is the new Commander of the Coral Gables Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars. Hollingsworth made this statement at the August staff meeting at the home of retired Maj. Walter S. Van Poyck, 6740 SW 128th Street. This Coral Gables military organization came into being following World War II. According to retired Maj. Charles F. Gardner, "Our membership includes about 100 active, retired, reserve and separated infantrymen, combat pilots, Marines, Navy and Coast Guardsmen. All served as officers in World War I and II and a few in the Korean War." Many of its chapter members have over 32 years' military service. "Some are downgrading any show of patriotism; some are even bitter when those who love America salute the flag or uncover. Too many weaknesses have crept into our way of thinking and some citizens continue to be uninformed about the increasing threat to peace and our way of life," continued Commander Hollingsworth. "Our flag is a symbol of liberty, it stands for humanity and all of us must join together and stress the return of old fashioned patriotism, ringing speeches in the public squares of every town. "City officials, civic clubs, churches and other groups must stress the return of flying our countries flag of freedom." This year for the sixth time, Coral Gables Chapter MOWW is conducting a Rededication of Colors Ceremony, on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. The Colors and organizational flags of active duty military units, veteran and patriotic organizations will be blessed and rededicated to God and country. The ceremony will take place at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19th on the parade grounds of the University of Miami, 5601 San Amaro Drive. "This year we should have both more participants and more spectators than even before," said Col. Peterson who will be Field Commander. "I hope the people are waking up to the need for such a public display of the Colors to generate an enthusiasm for freedom to match that of the anti-American thinking which has been growing unhindered for altogether too long. "We hope our colorful display will be one of the activities which will encourage even a greater display of patriotic fervor in these troubled times. "I wish everyone in this area could be at the parade ground, see these colors pass in review and make his own resolution to see Americanism victorious and the everlasting defeat of the enemies of our democracy."

Every Child Should Have Chance to Dance

Your child may have a gift for dancing but it will take lessons and proper guidance to develop her natural talents. The joy of moving to music, releases a shy child's inhibitions; channels the aggressive child's energy. Dancing develops a beautiful strong body, and lovely legs. Thin legs, knock-knees, heavy legs, are all improved by the very special exercises used to strengthen a dancer's legs. To walk with grace, hold her head high and stand tall and straight; these can be your gift to your daughter through dancing. Peggo Cromer received her dance training from many of the outstanding teachers in America, Europe and India. Among them; Muriel Stuart, Thalia Mara, Arthur Mahoney, Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn, Peter DiFalco, La-Meri, Charles Weidman, Doris Humphrey, Edward Caton, Igor Schwezoff. She had danced professionally with Lee Sherman, Sasha Brastoff, and Ranu Devi; and in many of the famous operas including Faust, Aida, Carmen, and in Concert Dance with Ted Shawn, Charles Weidman, B. Chown and Peter Hamilton. Miss Cromer has composed many ballets for children including Cinderella, Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty, The Jolly Toymaker and Ring Around Mother Goose. During my visit to the South Miami School of Ballet, I was immediately fascinated watching the children in class. One could easily see by the expression of the children's faces, they enjoyed every minute of their dancing instruction. The older girls, also, were completely absorbed in their study of this beautiful cultural art form. Therapy in dance is comparatively new as applied to children. For years dancers have used therapy to strengthen an injured knee, ankle or back. But now, many fine doctors, especially Pediatricians and Orthopedic specialists, send children to Miss Cromer for corrective exercises to help weak ankles, flat feet, pronated heels, knock-knees, pigeon toes and also poor posture. Miss Cromer said, "It is a great joy to me to see the improvement in the young bodies." Peggo Cromer is a member of Dance Masters of America and also examiner for Southeastern Florida. She was elected to membership to the National Academy of Ballet, the highest organization of Ballet Teachers in this country. The National Academy of Ballet has developed a system of teaching by graded classes. The reason for this very fine graded method is: to teach balance and to stress body alignment before teaching difficult technique. It assures you that you and your child will have the benefit of the finest dance training available. Ev Stillwell, who heads the Tap and Jazz department, has an excellent background of professional and teaching experience, she is formerly from Detroit. A new class will be started for Teen-agers in Modern Jazz and American Bandstand dances, there will also be a similar class for the pre-teen set. Call Miss Cromer or Miss Stilwell for a personal discussion of your child, MO 7-3722 or MO 1-4218. The studio is located in South Miami, two blocks past the South Miami Library and 1/2-block off Sunset Drive. 7310 SW 62nd Place. Peggo Cromer instructs her students (left), Concetta Difilippi, Kathleen Thomas, and Dee Wirkus.
