Cool Plan for Ice Cubes To Save Money in Gables

Keeping drinks cool for employes proved to be expensive, so the City Commission has decided to go into the ice cube making business. Commissioners have authorized the transfer of $4,000 from the Working Capital Fund to finance the purchase of three ice making units. Total cost is $6,500. City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. said that cost of making the ice cubes will be reduced from 86 cents per 100 pounds to 10 cents by purchasing the machines rather than renting them. The machines will be located at the incinerator, Granada and Biltmore Golf Courses. The cubes will cool water containers used by golf course and trash pickup crews.

More & More Parking Tickets

Traffic tickets issued to Gableites for violations continue to drop off but parking tickets are up, according to statistics released by the Metro Court. Only 46 traffic tickets were issued in July, compared to 86 in July of 1960. Conversely, 3,753 parking tickets were issued, compared to 2,089 the year before. Revenue jumped from $7,129 to $10,705 in the same period.

2 Retiring Secretaries Are Feted

Two long-service employes of International Petroleum Co. were honored at a luncheon at the Riviera County Club Aug. 24 on the occasion of their forthcoming retirement. They are Miss Grace Hardy and Miss Velma Cain, both of whom have served for many years as executive secretaries. Miss Hardy joined an affiliated company in Canada in 1922 and Miss Cain was employed in 1937. Both ladies came to Coral Gables in 1951 when the executive offices of International Petroleum Co. were moved from Toronto, Canada to Coral Gables. MISS HARDY MISS CAIN
