75 Women and Me: Bridge Party 'Cards'
By RAYMOND LANG Times Reporter I went to a bridge party with 75 women. It was fun. It's a good group, the Coral Gables Junior Woman's Club, which was raising funds to air condition its clubhouse. I noticed something. Doesn't mean much, but when you don't know how to play bridge and you're in the middle of 75 women who do, you have time on your hands. I noticed wonderfully enlightening things. Like 11 women wore pearl necklaces and half wore shorts. Now I said I don't know how to play bridge. I'm a Monopoly man, myself. I saw something that didn't make sense. There was one woman, who looked like somebody's aunt — nice, if you know what I mean — who'd every now and then peak over at the cards in the hands of the woman sitting next to her. I thought maybe they were partners and could do that. But then this same woman leaned over the other way and looked at that woman's cards. This was not right, my sense of justice told me. I asked Mrs. Robert Rogers, 731 Davis Rd., why this woman could do that, look at everybody's cards. Mrs. Rogers told me this woman was a "dummy." That, I thought, wasn't nice to say, but for some reason, it seemed to make it right for the woman to peek at the cards in other people's hands. It was going to rain soon. The air had already cooled. "I'm freezing to death. I'm going to see if I can find a sweater," said Mrs. Weldon B. Lewis, 1502 Madrid St. She was back soon, no sweater. Mrs. Lewis settled down to her cards. Then she called to someone at the next table. "Pat! . . . Pat? . . . Joan! Ask Pat if she put up my car windows." Joan (Mrs. J. C. Pereno, Jr., 198 Sunrise Ave.) asked Pat (Mrs. David McDonald, 4160 Grove St.). Pat hadn't closed the windows. By now, I was staring into the ground glass of my camera. Carefully, I was focusing on this woman, my finger pressed on the shutter release. Suddenly, she and a dozen others leaped to their feet. I got scared. I didn't know what was happening. It was raining and they were simply going to close their car windows. Bridge is fun. But I'll stick to Monopoly.
