You Can't Vote Unless...

MAURER R. C. HARTNETT Coral Gables Jaycees today (Thursday) will launch a voter registration campaign as part of a state-wide effort by the Jaycees called "Operation Registration." Insuranceman Robert C. Hartnett has been named to head the local drive. "While Coral Gables votes 40 to 50 per cent, it should certainly be an aim to improve this, but more basically, we must first get the highest registration per cent and then improve our voting record," Hartnett said. Another Gableite, Forrest Maurer, 5910 Cellini St., has been named state coordinator for the Jaycees in a program originally suggested by Tom Adams, secretary of state for Florida. Gov. Farris Bryant has designated this "Operation Registration Month." Hartnett said he will seek the help of religious organizations as main boost of the local drive. "A community of the high caliber that we like to feel that Coral Gables is, we should be correlated with the aims and ideals of Americanism," he said. Hartnett said he was aware of Coral Gables "mediocre" voting record, which reflects County voting trends. Dade County, with a population over 21 of 632,453, had only 317,620 votes cast in the 1960 general election. There are 407,888 registered voters, according to the Jaycees. Hartnett said the Jaycees will try to get the city's cooperation and will work with the county in the registration program.
