Gables Debaters Eye State Prize

GOING OVER their notes for this Saturday's forensic tournament are from the left Martin Goldberg, Jan Faber, coach Mrs. Gloria Lane, Betsy Warren, Richard Fisher, Tim Ferris and Rusty Barefield. (Times photo) This Saturday, Coral Gables High will send four debaters and two extemporaneous speakers to compete with the best from other South Florida high schools to decide who will journey to the University of Florida in Gainesville for the state championship Mar. 2-3. The qualifying rounds Saturday will be held at the University of Miami. The topic will be federal aid to education. The four Gables High debaters will be Martin L. Goldberg, 2776 SW 32nd Ave.; Jan Faber, 2430 SW 25th St.; Tim Ferris, Key Biscayne; and Rusty Barefield, 8250 SW 53rd Ave. The two extemporaneous speakers will be Betsy Lane, Key Biscayne, and Richard Fisher, 5422 Orduna Dr. In warming up for the all-important, day-long debates this weekend, the Gables High forensic squad debated on federal aid to education recently before the Coral Gables Rotarians at their weekly luncheon. The debate went something like this: The affirmative, which believes the federal government should financially aid public schools on the elementary and secondary levels, offered this main point: Classes throughout the country are greatly overcrowded. This destroys any chance of individual training and leads to greater tension among the students. The affirmative argued that the problem has existed for a long time and that the state governments have done little to alleviate overcrowded conditions. The main reason, the affirmative said, the states have not tried to ease the problem is that they lack enough money to do so. But the federal government does have the money at its disposal to ease the situation. The negative countered with this argument: They argued that classrooms are not necessarily overcrowded. But that if they are, this does not definitely mean it will lead to student-tension or hurt the classroom instruction. The negative said that through state aid to the public schools, classroom shortage has dropped from 370,000 in 1954 to 142,000 in 1957. The next decade should see this latter figure chopped in half, the negative side held.

Rader Asks More Money On Account

A request by Rader and Associates for a $2,400 payment on its $12,000 tab for a zoning study of the City has been deferred for one week by the City Commission. The preliminary report was presented to the commission several weeks ago and to the Zoning And Planning Boards recently. If approved the request would bring the payments to $9,600. The final report is to be presented at some later unspecified date.

They Want A District

A firm has asked for and got an okay from the City Commission to create a special district to beautify a street. Miller and Solomon, a construction firm building a two-story office, got approval from the commission on setting up the district on Rosaro Avenue from South Dixie Highway to Menendez Avenue.
