On Statewide Level Optimists Push Compulsory Swimming
Coral Gables Optimist Club has convinced the statewide Optimist organization that swimming should be taught in elementary schools and where possible made a compulsory subject. A resolution to this effect was originated by the Gables and passed at the district convention in St. Augustine recently. Representing the local club were President Sandy Marshall, Secretary Frank Toback Treasurer Jack Schurwitz and Ainslee R. Ferdie. The resolution stated that 6,500 individuals lose their lives by drowning annually, and that in Dade County the testing of elementary school children's swimming ability showed 20% were proficient swimmers but 44% were unable to pass a beginning swimming test. Each of the 100 state clubs will investigate the feasibility of incorporating swimming programs in their locales, explained co-chairman Ferdie. The clubs will appeal to the local boards of public instruction and, depending on local conditions, will recommend a compulsory program. Ferdie said, "In Dade County, we feel that with the use of public facilities, we have the accommodations to make the program compulsory." Ferdie said that among members of the local school board, there is some feeling that swimming instruction should be handled by the parents, not by the board. The Optimist Club plans to re-petition the board soon.
Auto Lightweights Cause Back Up at Inspection
Have you found the wait at the Coral Gables auto inspection station long? So have the City Commissioners. The main problem appears to be the truck inspection equipment which isn't working properly for some small cars, the Commission was told. Big cars use truck equipment when trucks aren't there, affording two lanes. Inspections have been narrowed down to one lane as a result, with long delays incurred. City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. is looking into the matter, he said, and will report back to the commission next week. Meanwhile a segregation of large and small cars appears in the making as a temporary measure.
