Girl Scouts Are Told We're at War Today
The captain spoke and the girls listened. The topic: patriotism. Capt. Robert G. Daugherty Jr., from Homestead Air Force Base, told some 250 South Dade Girl Scouts and Brownies of the value of patriotism last Friday. A 20-minute film on early America and the conflict between the colonists and England just prior to the American Revolution preceded Capt. Daugherty's talk in the Coral Gables High School auditorium. He talked about the dangers faced by the Pilgrims; indians, the bitter cold, wild animals. Captain Daugherty then switched to the present scene. "Today, we are at war. But the war we're in is not fought with airplanes and guns. It's fought with words. "You have heard a man named Mr. Khrushchev say on TV that 'We will bury you and your grandchildren will live under Communism.' "The grandchildren he spoke of will be your grandchildren," Capt. Daugherty said.

Commission Sets Dial On Air Conditioners
Coral Gables' pioneering air conditioner ordinance was adopted as an emergency measure Tuesday by the City Commission after revisions were made to an ordinance previously considered on first reading. The ordinance is now in effect. Added to the noisy air conditioner portions of the previously considered ordinance is the inclusion of "all mechanical equipment installed on the premises" section. This has been interpreted to mean fans and blowers working with air conditioning equipment and also other mechanical equipment. At the same time, the Commission retained the 60 decibel (unit of sound) noise limit previously approved and a distance of 15 feet as the maximum from which the legal limit may be taken. The law will be in effect from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. If the City finds equipment to be operating in violation of the ordinance, the owner will be ordered to cease operation immediately and not allowed to resume until corrections have been made. The ordinance will supplement a long-standing ordinance against noise which covers a more general category of noise nuisances.
PTA to View Ponce Work
Mrs. Lawson Cheatham, 1413 Sopera Ave., president of the Ponce de Leon Junior High School Parent Teacher Association, will preside at the annual Founders day meeting at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the school. Parents will view the science projects, the brain children of both boys and girls, to be displayed in the Library building, and the students will be on hand to explain.
