Gablegrams

by helen reynolds society editor It's the annual George Washington Birthday dinner-dance tomorrow when members of the Century Club and their ladies dine and dance at the Coral Gables Country Club. But this year, the theme will be the United Nations and the decor, thought up by Herbert D. Jarvis, member of the executive committee, will have the flags of the UN and the UN emblem will be used on each of the sidelights in the ballroom. Red, white and blue drapery will fly from the balcony and the center of attraction will be the Statue of Liberty. A number of the military will be guests and large parties have been planned. Col. and Mrs. Richmond T. Gibson will have Gen. and Mrs. Omar Bradley (who spend a winter vacation yearly at the Diplomat Hotel) at their table. General Bradley and Colonel Gibson were classmates at West Point. Also Century Club member Comdr. Walter S. Ginn and Mrs. Ginn will round out this table. Others heading large tables are Mr. and Mrs. Ted Hodge with 42; Mr. and Mrs. Edward S. Christiansen with 40; Dr. and Mrs. William Dismukes will have 44 jointly with the A. Judson Hills; the Lee Ezells 18; the Leroy Farmers, 20 and the George Elliott Pattersons Sr., 32. Mrs. George Knight, 4500 Ingraham Hwy., who is active in the Coral Gables Country Club's Little Theatre events had "stellar" performance of waiting for the main actor at an open house Feb. 4 at 4:30 p.m. Guest of honor, Dr. Weimer H. Hicks, president of Kalamazoo College, Michigan, was due to meet with the local alumni, but his plane was late more than an hour. Edna Knight said, "One by one, the alums would leave, and you couldn't blame them." She said when Dr. Hicks did arrive they had the coffee and heard him tell news of Kalamazoo. Among Kalamazoo local alums attending the affair were Miss Lois Parks of Key Biscayne; Mr. and Mrs. David Butterbroadt, 5828 SW 69th Ave., Dr. John C. Finerty, 630 San Lorenzo Ave. The Knights are the parents of three children: Donald, a college freshman now in the service; Allan Knight, a sophomore, who made the Dean's list at Rollins College, and daughter, Ellen Knight a seventh grader at Ponce de Leon Junior High School.
