Use a Tough Technique Dr. Sockman Draws Bead on ‘Moral Decay’

By DAVID GRIER Correspondent "We must use a Communist method to reverse the trend towards moral dissipation and loss of freedom in America." These are not the words of a socialist but of Dr. Ralph Washington Sockman, renowned Methodist clergyman. He discussed his views in an interview following his guest sermon at the First Methodist Church of Coral Gables Sunday morning. The New York minister was referring to the Communist method of infiltrating and influencing through the formation of "cells" or basic units. The idea is to mobilize all the resources of a unit so that the cell has maximum voice. In advancing this view, Dr. Sockman, who is the author of numerous books on religion, maintains that this is probably the only hope to reverse the "stampede" toward moral decay in this country. "This stampede can be halted if the Christian stands up for his principles. The individual can form a cell by himself or with his family and influence others by example... "Self-discipline is vital to the continued freedom of the individual. "As a nation, we are finding DR. SOCKMAN out that bigness is not greatness." Quoting from the bible, Dr. Sockman likened America to "the house that was built on sand instead of rock" and collapsed when exposed to the elements. "Remember," he warned, "the good things in life are paid for in advance — the evil things are paid for later on the installment plan of remorse." Dr. Sockman noted that "there is a middle ground between necessary personal control and natural governmental control in which the individual must exercise this self-discipline." "This is the road to freedom — if one fails to control himself, there will always be someone who will be only too glad to do it for him." The 72-year-old preacher cited as examples of "moral disintegration" the recent price-fixing by electrical company executives and the road construction kick-backs in various states. Dr. Sockman, who was born in Mt. Vernon, Ill., holds 17 degrees or titles from as many institutions of higher education. He has been a minister since his graduation from the Union Theological Seminary at New York in 1916 and has served with the Christ Methodist Church on Park Avenue for the past 45 years. He was guest preacher at the First Methodist Church for both Sunday morning services.
