Canal Suit Readied By Davis
The autopsy is in: Fish which died in the Coral Gables Waterway recently suffocated. The fish, giant snook and bass, died of lack of oxygen, according to Metro Attorney Darrey Davis, Louis F. Westbrook, director of sanitation, and John Eckhoff, assistant director. Davis said Monday that he will move this week to take legal action against J. J. Lamb, owner of the section of the canal from SW 62nd Avenue west to SW 67th Ave. Last week, crews from the Metro Public Works Department, picked up hundreds of decomposing fish from the canal after abutting property owners complained about the stench and flies. CHOKED CANAL Eckhoff, assistant director of sanitation, said this week that spraying of water hyacinths by Metro may have contributed to de-oxygenization of the water. The hyacinths have been choking the canal. Eckhoff said the canal is heavily stocked with fish and that the shortage of oxygen caused by lack of circulation of water and the decaying vegetation may have combined to kill the fish. "We're proceeding as quickly as possible against Mr. Lamb," Davis said. The county attorney said that the water hyacinths and the spraying were not at the root of the trouble. LAMB BUILT DAM Lamb built the earth dam in the canal and blocked off natural circulation of water east through the waterway which empties into Biscayne Bay. The developer put up the dam after the County refused to remove the salinity dam at Red Road or to buy his section of the canal for more than $60,000. Erection of the Lamb dam causes drainage water to reverse its direction west of the dam and eventually flow out the Tamiami Canal. The water in the canal lying between SW 67th Avenue and Red Road lies virtually dormant, according to County officials. Removal of the dam would restore the natural flow east over the salinity dam at Red Road. Coral Gables residents have lodged frequent complaints about the stench and debris floating in around the Biltmore Golf Course due to lack of circulation.
The Dead Fish Are Gone! CLEARED OF DEAD FISH but still infested with tall weeds is the Coral Gables Waterway, west of the salinity dam at Red Road. Abutting property owner, A. E. Tipton, 5917 SW 35th St., points to the tall weeds. (Times Photo by Raymond Lang).
GOP Man Opens Here
Jay McGlon, Republican candidate for Congress in the Fourth District, has opened a campaign headquarters in Coral Gables at Miracle Mile and LeJeune Road. "Because of the unusual and highly encouraging amount of interest in our campaign in this 'Off-year' election, we felt the need for three new locations (also Homestead and Perrine). "The people are increasingly concerned over the Kennedy administration's anti-free enterprise policies and do-nothing approach to Cuba. And I believe they have had enough of my opponent's being a rubber stamp for those attitudes," McGlon said.

Trophy Winner Must Wait for It
Gail Peto, 6255 SW 56th St., South Miami, won the 16 to 17 age division golf trophy given by the Dade County Golf Association Oct. 3, but she had to wait for it. Officials and last year's winner apparently failed to get together. "It's a disgraceful thing," said Monroe Miller, 180 Arvida Pkwy., father of Helen Miller, who won the trophy last year. Miller said they were never notified by officials of the awards at Miami Springs Villas. Speedy Gonzalez, who handled the affair, saw it different. He thought the Millers should have brought in the trophy. Actually, there are two trophies given, one stays with the winner, the other is a traveling award, Gonzales said. Victor Jarvis, 740 Malaga Ave., was crowned Junior Champ of Dade County at the same ceremonies. John Laponzina, of Miami Shores, won the 13 to 15 age group division. Sandy Guerin, won the Biltmore Golf Course, 12 and under trophy. The Bill Tinder trophy went to Don Sayet, of Bay Shores Country Club. In team competition, the defending Biltmore group took it again. The team is made up of Paul Bismack, Scott Nikkelsen, James Vincent and Victor Jarvis. Granada Golf Course's young group was runner up in the inter-club matches. Members are Dick Nichols, Rick Culver, Larry Derry and Jock Mills.

No Club Permitted At Granada
A proposal by the Coral Gables Jaycees to put up a clubhouse on the west side of the Granada Golf Course fell through Tuesday. The City Commission turned thumbs down on the idea after hearing a report from City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. Robinson told the Commission that the building the Jaycees wanted to put up was too small and otherwise inadequate for the purpose. The Jaycees met with the Commission Monday in an informal conference meeting at Tyler's Restaurant to propose moving a building offered to them on Palm Island to a spot near the Boy Scout hut near Coral Way and South Greenway Drive. Robinson told the Commission that about the only suitable location for the building would be the City's incinerator site near Coral Way and the Palmetto Expressway.
