Little Green Bottle Works Way From The Indies to Louisiana

By FRANCIS FLYNN "This day I found on the beach one mile west of Bell Pass, which is the mouth of Bayou Lafourche . . . one green bottle with a note from you," began a letter addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Adolf Deutschle, 5000 SW 83rd St., South Miami, last week. It was from Mrs. E. M. Egle of Golden Meadows. "It's one of the strangest things that has ever happened to me," confessed Mrs. Gladys Deutschle, after she received the letter. The story behind the letter from Mrs. Egle began last January when the Deutschles and Mr. and Mrs. Lambert Duhe and Mr. and Mrs. Preston Duhe. Both of New Iberia, La., sailed to the West Indies on a vacation. While onboard the "Eleuthera," which was anchored at St. Kitt's Island, all of the members of the party wrote a message, in which they included their names and addresses and set it sailing in a green glass bottle. Mrs. Egle and Mrs. Wayne Plaisance found the bottle in the surf off Bell Pass. Parts of the message were waterstained but most of it could be read. "It was on its way home," explained Mrs. Deutschle. You see we are all from New Iberia, La., originally and New Iberi is only about 60 miles from Bell Pass." Among the other twists of fate woven into the story are the facts that Mrs. Egle's daughter Mrs. E. R. Wilson lives in Miami, and that the Deutschle's son Stephen took a trip to the Seattle World's Fair with Mrs. Ruth Bourque, a relative of Mrs. Plaisance. Mrs. Egle's letter ended with the comment, "Thought you would like to know your bottle wasn't lost." The Deutschles are negotiating with Mrs. Egle to retrieve bottle and message.
