'I'm Sorry' Won't Remove Buckshot From Cop's Arm

When Gables Officer Hank Porterfield headed for the Glades Saturday morning, he thought it was open season on doves. After getting a load of buckshot later that afternoon, near Krome Avenue and Eureka Drive, he wasn't sure it wasn't open season on policemen. Porterfield, 37, 10301 SW 64th St., became the season's first casualty just a few hours after the dove hunting opened. An unidentified hunter fired a blast that peppered his body with lead shot just as he was picking up his 11th dove. One away from the limit. "I'm sorry," the deadly hunter said from a safe distance as he beat a hasty retreat. "I'd like to get my hands on that guy," Porterfield said later, still nursing the wounds. The nine-year veteran with the Gables police department, spent several hours at South Miami Hospital having some of the buckshot removed. Reflecting on his narrow escape, Porterfield analyzed his assailant this way: He couldn't have been a hunter — a hunter wouldn't shoot at a moving bush. Only a wild hunter or one hunting for quail out of season could have done a thing like that. Or maybe he was hunting for a policeman. What hurt most, Porterfield indicated, was the ribbing he's had to take from fellow officers. Who is the deadly hunter? Porterfield is acheing to find out. "This person has no place around hunters for he is walking death with a gun in his hands," Porterfield said grimly. HANK PORTERFIELD ... Open Season

Aragon Avenue Property Offered City for $50,000

Ellveeay Corp., owners of the three-story building on the northwest corner of Miracle Mile and Salzedo Street, is looking for a deal with City on its Aragon Avenue property. While the firm is reportedly offering the five lots between 342-348 Aragon for $50,000, City Commissioners Monday indicated they leaned to a Zain type parking lot plan. Ellveeay reportedly paid $60,000 for the same property last spring. The announced intention at that time was to park between 20 and 22 cars on each side of an existing building, once the site of a theater, dancing school and business office. Under the Zain Plan, the land is leased to the City on a tax forgiveness basis, with the owner receiving 35% of parking revenue. The standard period is for 25 years and the City pays the cost of improving and metering the lots. The City has the option of purchasing the property within the lease period on 90 days' notice.

Fashions in Telephones...Have Changed, Too

In the eighteen nineties when the new upright telephone was first introduced, the well-dressed woman's skirt swept the ground, and bustles were the rage. Telephone fashions have changed, too. Today's homes include multi-extension phones, home interphones and the melodic bell chime. Businesses rely on such modern equipment as the dial switchboard, the speakerphone and the call director. Tomorrow will bring the phone that turns on the oven while you're out, and the phone that lets you see the person to whom you're talking. Your telephone will continue to change and improve, but Florida Southern Bell's tradition of sound management, community responsibility and dependable service remain the same. Change and stability are the hallmarks of good business. Your Telephone Company believes in both. Southern Bell ...Growing with the Future
