Gables Band Needs $10,000 To Make Dec. Chicago Trip

A fund-raising project to send the Coral Gables High School Band to the National Midwest Band Clinic in Chicago is getting underway. The Band Parents Association intends to raise $10,000 in time to send the band to the Dec. 19-22 clinic. The main source of income will come from an official program of the days' events in which the parents will sell statewide advertising. According to Charles Rodgers, head of the program soliciting, the group is appealing to the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce to back their efforts. "Our plans," said Rodgers, "hinge on the support that we receive from the Chamber of Commerce." Additional funds will come from fruit cake sales by the band members, selling of Christmas cards, and other such fund-raising projects. The band, about a hundred members strong, will charter an airplane to make the trip. The invitation to Coral Gables High marks only the second time that a Florida high school has been asked to attend the National Midwest Band Clinic. Miami High made a similar trip in 1951. The clinic invites only the top four high school, top two junior high, and top service bands in the nation. Five to six thousand band directors from all over the nation attend, and each band gives a one and one-half hour concert. Coral Gables will present its concert on the night of Thursday, Dec. 20. William Le Due is the band director for Coral Gables High.

City Says No

The Cooperative Advertising Committee was turned down Tuesday by the City Commission on its new proposal to have free parking in a five-block area between Douglas and Le Jeune Roads for its upcoming sale. City Commissioners stood firm on their offer of $600, no bagged meters and city-wide during the two-day sale.

Murphy No. 9

Although City Commission and Mrs. Joe Murphy had their ninth child Oct. 3 at Doctors' Hospital, we've delayed telling you about it until they could choose a name. They've chosen it. It's Jeffery Thomas Murphy. Jeffery weighed in at 7 lbs., 15 oz. It's the Murphys' third son. They live at 701 Alcazar Ave.

Open Door On the Mile Turned Down

The City Commission Tuesday slammed the door on Florsheim Shoe Store's proposal for an open front establishment at 272-274 Miracle Mile. Although the vote 3-2 in favor, a 4-1 vote was necessary to override the unanimous objections of the Zoning Board. Mayor Robert L. Searle was joined by Commissioners Joe Murphy and C. L. Dressel Jr. in favoring the plan on a one-year trial basis, but Commissioners George Wilson's and Franklin Evan's negative votes block the plan. Although open in front, the store would have been air conditioned. A similar store is in operation at the new Dadeland Shopping Center. The Miracle Mile property is owned by Mrs. Jack Holmes, 1228 Alhambra Cir. Her husband appeared before the Commission Tuesday to argue in favor of the proposal. Leon Rose, a Florsheim company official, and architect C. R. Able also argued for the open front operation.

No Meeting

The Oct. 23 meeting of the Coral Gables City Commission has been cancelled. City Commissioners are planning to attend the Florida League of Municipalities meeting in Miami Beach on that date.

Why Invest Your Savings Locally?

Almost every dollar you save at CORAL GABLES FEDERAL is put to work here in Dade County, helping other Greater Miamians to buy or build new homes... purchasing many different materials and services... helping our local building economy. How Does This Affect You? Building is one of our basic industries in South Florida. Payrolls Most Important In building, many dollars go directly into payrolls: to masons and carpenters, plumbers and electricians, plasterers and painters, as well as the contractor and architect, too. Other dollars paid to various dealers for cement block, lumber, plumbing and electrical supplies, plaster, paint, roofing and steel also add to local payrolls through salaries and wages to employees of these firms. Never-Ending Cycle These same dollars continue to work for everyone. They are used to buy food, clothing, other family needs... to pay the dentist and doctor... for fun and recreation... and some are saved again and put to work again, helping everyone once more.
