GABLEITE AUTHOR EWING He May Have Found Christ's Missing Years

By JUNE GRAY Woman's Editor Gableite author Upton C. Ewing will soon publish a book which he believes accounts for the 18 disputed years of Christ's life—from 12 to 30—which are not mentioned in the Bible. Mr. Ewing believes Christ spent these years in an Essene monastery on the shores of the Dead Sea with John the Baptist, where he learned to be a rabbi and prepared for his work. The book, "The Prophet of the Dead Sea Scrolls," which will be published in about 30 days by the Philosophical Library, New York, is based upon the scrolls of Essene sect, which were discovered in caves near the Dead Sea in 1947. The Essenes were a Jewish group who formed a community near the Dead Sea where they practiced a life of abstinence, eating only a vegetable diet and preparing themselves for the coming of a teacher of righteousness, which Mr. Ewing thinks is exemplified in the life of Christ. Mr. Ewing takes issue with the French Biblical scholar, Dupont - Sommer, who says the Essene prophet had already appeared, was crucified and rose again about 65 or 63 B.C., almost a century before Christ died. But Mr. Ewing thinks that Christ was the savior which the Essenes were looking for because they existed only to look for a savior, and in A.D. 30 he estimated they buried their scrolls and gave up the monastery, a move they would not have made if they had not believe Jesus fulfilled their prophecies. Mr. Ewing, who lives at 362 Minorca Ave., spent five years doing the initial research for his book in his own library, the public libraries here and in New York, in various periodicals and booklets, as well as being in direct contact with the scholars that translated the scrolls. He also has been in the caves where the discovery was made and in the laboratories where the pieces were put together. A few of them were broken into fragments to keep the government from claiming the manuscripts and sold to the archeologists by the Arabs for $7 an inch. UPTON C. EWING ... new book
