Garden-Variety Hobby Turns Into Unusual Shop
For years Kitty Canny enjoyed learning about and looking at potted plants at home. Under her system of patience, trial and error, and love for growing things, her thriving patio collection reached some 500 items. The time had come to move the family or move the plants! The plants were moved — into a charming home of their own, designed expressly for them by local architect Howard Dunn. Now Kathryn Canny and her son, Hugh, have a shop — just off Bird Road on 98th Avenue — which is really unique in several respects. It is NOT a nursery with crowded walkways and a confusion of greenery. It is a delightful display of a very wide variety of plants, both common and rare, plus several groups of most attractive pottery and ceramic pieces. As you wander around, you will notice that each item is clearly marked with name and price. And the prices are very modest indeed! If you are fond of looking at the same old things growing around the house or patio, you will be fascinated by the different possibilities here. As you enter, you will see first the smaller size plants, priced from 89c to $4.50, so suitable for that extra touch at home or for a hospitalized friend. Many are in unusual pots, some of which like a special "strawberry jar" or African violet pot, were hand-rolled by a North Carolina family, some designed and fired by Hugh Canny's wife, Helen and others the handcrafted products of well known firms such as Haeger. There are separate vases of all types, and some striking arrangements of artificial flowers done by a French firm. The patio will probably draw you next, with its well-filled hanging baskets. Don't miss the low table of Bonzai plants, some of which are nine years old and already set by skillful trimming into their Oriental shapes. Then you are in the water-controlled green house where plants from India mingle with those from a Pinellas County farm. Here Mrs. Canny watches over botanicals of many varieties. She has orchids which, once started, bloom continuously for two to three years. Another kind gives out a lovely fragrance beginning at exactly eight in the evening! The range goes all the way from Bromeliads which are collector's items to small stock plants costing 39c. Here is also a type of English Ivy which really does grow in Florida. A new idea is the natural stalk "Totem Pole." No wood for bugs to get into or plants to outgrow. She provides a particular variety of Dracaena with a sturdy leafless stalk and an umbrella-like growth at the top. The Philodendron winds around this, and the two grow old together! At Kitty Canny's, you are welcome to browse unattended, or to take advantage of her knowledge and expert advice in your selection. Anyone who loves plants will find a visit here a worthwhile and most enjoyable experience! Inside and outside Merge in Designed-to-order House for Kitty Canny Plants and Pottery.
