South Miami To Purchase Brown Parcel For $39,000

South Miami Tuesday night, in effect, purchased the Brown property, a parcel of land including a fertilizer warehouse adjacent to City Hall on Sunset Drive, for $39,000. Council authorized City Manager C. B. Petry to execute purchase of the property from Winfred Brown to include three annual payments. The first installment will be $25,000, with the remaining payments of lesser amounts. The land, designated as 6110 SW 62nd St., is a tract 100 by 100 by 100 by 100 feet. The city, when it takes over possession of the land in 90 days, will tear down the fertilizer building and revamp the entrance to City Hall. Meanwhile, the city's inspection station, lying immediately east of the Brown property, may be moved to another location. In other business, Council: PASSED a resolution granting lot size and frontage variances to permit the construction of a single family residence at SW 67th Ave .and SW 76th Ter. READ a letter from Scott Bagby, who has been retained by the city to present a master plan of the city, saying that he will submit the plan to the city fathers at a tentatively set special Council meeting Nov. 29. The plan was due last month. Council last week wrote Bagby to find out when the plan would be ready. TABLED a resolution granting assorted variances for the construction of a new Mount Olive Negro church in the city's colored section. The variances apply to the front, rear and side setbacks. The church now is in a frame structure at 6316 SW 59th Pl. which would be torn down for a new CBS structure. GRANTED permission to South Miami Baptist Church to the erection of a tent from Nov. 30 to Dec. 5 for use in the promotion of a church membership drive. The tent, 60 by 90 feet in size, will be erected in an area directly across SW 62nd Ave. from South Miami Hospital. READ a letter from Marion Boriss, director of Public Works for Metro, stating that a master plan for Metro's sanitary sewer system is underway and won't be completed until Dec., 1961. South Miami had requested information from Metro about the county's proposed sewer program in hopes Metro could give the city sewage disposal in the near future. South Miami now is contemplating laying its own sewer pipes. The earth, in its annual journey around the sun, travels a distance of 590,000,000 miles.

Irate Neighbors Sign Warrants In Dog Case

A group of irate Coral Gables residents have signed warrants against a neighbor for allegedly harboring and keeping vicious dogs. Mary Lou Robinson, was charged in warrants signed by Mrs. Maxine Glass, 111 Alhambra; Frederick R. Merritt, 1107 Alhambra; Mrs. James F. Keough, 1111 Alhambra and Irma S. Turner, 1028 Obispo. The case will be tried before Municipal Judge Charles Spooner next Tuesday. The four plaintiffs claim that the Robinson dogs have been terrorizing them and keeping them awake for the past year. The defendant, who lives at 1043 Alhambra, was fined last year in Municipal Court over an altercation with Gables' Officer Shirley Searle following a traffic case. She has also rebelled against paying the city garbage and trash tax and tangled with City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr., who is not related, last year over allowing solicitation of names on a petition for elective government.

Zoning Board Overruled On Clinic Construction

The Coral Gables City Commission overruled its Zoning Board last week when it approved the construction of a new dental clinic and medical building at the southwest corner of Douglas Rd. and Alhambra Plaza. Commissioners voted 4-1, with Commissioner Frank Kerdyk voting no. The Commission's action will enable Dr. Robert L. Cherry to erect the one-story building on a lot previously zoned for apartment use. A group of area property owners opposed the zoning change.

Plunge Into Store Front Recalls Recent Tragedies

MANIKINS SEEM TO BECKON to the runaway car which crashed through the front display window at Lila May Dress Shop, 297 Miracle Mile, Friday evening. One woman had a narrow escape as the car, driven by Blanca Martinez Viana, jumped the curb, knocked over a meter and crashed through the store front. - Photo by Bob Davis. A possible repeat of recent tragedies in which pedestrians have been pushed through display windows by runaway vehicles was averted only through luck late Friday afternoon in Coral Gables. A woman, identified by police only as Pauline Wilson, no age or address known fainted at the scene from shock after a close call with the rampaging vehicle. The car, driven by Blanca Martinez Viana, 29, of 3000 SW Third Ave., smashed into a front display window at Lila May Dress Shop, 297 Miracle Mile, sending broken glass and debris flying everywhere. She was charged with careless driving. Gables Officer R. L. Merzweiler said that the Viana car was pulling in to park in front of the store when it suddenly jumped the curb, knocked down a meter and plowed into the store. Damage to the car was estimated at $300. A similar accident occurred on Miracle Mile several months ago, fortunately with no tragic results, and another woman driver struck the First National Bank Building on Andalusia earlier, smashing the entire front of her car after she jumped a curb and lost control. Several fatalities occurred in Miami last year when cars mounted sidewalks and bowled over shoppers like ten pins in the downtown area. Improper handling of automatic transmissions was blamed in most of the accidents.

Dateline: Southwest High Marine Lab Opens Doors For Summer Study

By LAURA HENRY An opportunity for Southwest High School juniors and seniors to work at the Miami Marine Laboratory this summer is one of the plans that resulted from the Regional IV, National Science Teachers Association, meeting on Miami Beach. Mr. James F. Miley, biology teacher, attended the meeting and was recorder for one of the discussion groups. He explained that another new idea is the Biological Science curriculum, now in the trial stage in schools throughout the county. Al Leliard, a Southwest student, won a $50 savings bond for his poster titled "Inform Yourself and Vote." The contest, sponsored by the League of Women Voters, was held in honor of American Art Week. Southwest has sent out College Day invitations to 60 colleges and universities throughout he United States. Representatives from the schools will meet Nov. 30. They will discuss tuitions, entrance fees, fraternities, sororities and other problems that face college freshmen. Students will have a chance to attend three separate meetings during the day. Addresses History Casses Mr. Thomas Cunningham, a representative of the Central and Southern Florida Flood Control District, addressed Mr. Joseph Carter's "Problems of American Democracy" classes. After showing a film on flood control, he answered questions concerning acquisition of lands for the project and the part the Army Corps of Engineers played in construction. Wally Dayhoff, this week sharing Coaches Choice honors with Don Wood, has established himself as one of the finest pass receivers in the Gold Coast Conference. Pass receiving is only one of his powers. He is also an outstanding blocker and tackler. As halfback he has demonstrated his unusual running and passing ability. Don Wood starts on both the offensive and defensive teams. He has been cited as "one of the hardest working boys on the team." Don played on the junior varsity team one year, and then was moved up to the varsity. He has remained varsity guard for the past two years. The Southwest Eagles, unbelievably noted by critics as the undisputed underdog, clipped the Knights of Columbus last week in a 13-12 victory. The Eagles haven't gotten rolling this year, and in last week's game they were handicapped by a loss of a number of players due to various circumstances. The high flying Eagles met the Jackson Generals Wednesday night in the Orange Bowl. Throughout the rugged game the Eagles fought back hard and held the Generals to a 6-6 tie. On Thanksgiving, Southwest will meet Coral Gables at the Coral Gables PBA Field in the traditional rivalry game at 10:30 a.m. At this game Southwest will celebrate its homecoming festivities.
