Landmark Will Become Restaurant

RENOVATION HAS BEGUN on La Fontana, a soon-to-be-opened Italian restaurant just off Ponce de Leon Blvd. The restaurant, under the management of the Paoletti brothers, has had a fabulous past, but not as a restaurant. Memories are caught in every brick and mortar of this historic Gables' building. By GRACE WHIPPLE There is a magic in Coral Gables architecture -- a magic that never fades. The Spanish-Venetian designs of the buildings are constant reminders of colorful history. At 2900 Ponce de Leon Blvd. stands a building which is a part of this colorful past. The building has no real name. But it has personality and it has a story -- A story that began in 1925 when Ralph Wilkins built a home for his Granada Shops, a store for the design and sale of exclusive furniture. Here skilled craftsmen produced Spanish, French and Italian designs with a realistic old-world artistry. Built on three levels the building towers over surrounding shops. Open balconies and intricate grill work made the structure more a part of a Spanish village than of an American city. Next Phase The next phase in the life of 2900 Ponce began in 1942 when the University of Miami took it over. For the next 17 years the building's 9000 square feet served many purposes -- from storage to use as a fraternity house. Early in 1959 the structure assumed a new identity. It became known as La Fontana, an espresso coffee house. Here, beneath the 28 foot ceiling of the main room, students gathered to pursue aesthetic interests. In an atmosphere of art, art was more readily inspired. Through the hand-carved doors passed drama students who came to rehearse plays. Around the Venetian fountain in the middle of the room sat young artists expressing themselves with brush and canvas. Another Change Recently another change took place in the history of 2900 Ponce. The New York owner of building decided to sell it. He called on his friends, Courtney and Mona Fondren, Coral Gables real estate brokers, to help him out. After much red tape the building became the property of Lewis Paoletti. Soon, 2900 Ponce will assume a new identity -- that of Paoletti's Italian restaurant. But the architectural magic will remain. "We plan to leave everything as it is," said Paoletti. "We'll add a few things, but the basic influence will remain." He outlined plans to have the old Dutch fireplace, the Venetian fountain, the big coach lanterns mounted impressively on sturdy cypress beams, and the Spanish courtyard with its imported Cuban tiles restored and refinished so that the building's uniqueness and beauty can be fully appreciated.
