Hit and Run Driver Wrecks Imported Car
A 30-year-old Coral Gables man miraculously escaped injury early Monday morning when his small imported car was struck and turned over by a hit and run car and smashed into a third car. William Carson Rogers, 222 Mendoza, was the unlucky accident victim who was lucky to escape unhurt. His 1960 Ford Prefect, rolled over and spun around, sustained an estimated $1000 damage in the 6:30 a.m. crash at Salzedo and Menores. A car owned by James M. Glass, of 1415 Salzedo, Apt. 1, struck by the uncontrolled Rogers car, suffered approximately $100 damage. According to Gables Officer G. A. Nauman, Rogers was northbound on Salzedo when the hit and run vehicle struck him in the side, knocked him over and continued on its way without stopping.

Two elderly persons were injured in a two-car collision at the intersection of Galiano and Palermo the morning of Nov. 10. Treated at Doctors' Hospital were George H. Knutson, 75, of 3400 LeJeune Rd., and Elizah M. Friedemann, 66, of 3240 Riviera Dr. Knutson was knocked out of his car following the collision and suffered contusions of the face, hands and knees. He was also treated at the scene by Coral Gables firemen. The Knutson car was eastbound on Palermo and collided broadside with the northbound Friedemann auto. Born During Civil War At 100 She Believes In Taking Care Of Herself
100 YEARS OF LIFE is time for reflection on the past. Helping Carrie Lombard to remember are such momentoes as photographs of relatives (foreground) taken on some happy occasion. Carrie, whose reflection is seen here in a mirror behind the photographs, is cared for by a housekeeper in a modest home at 519 Alhambra Cir. Carrie Lombard was 100 years old recently. She observed her milestone on Nov. 9 in life quietly, modestly . . . as she has spent her life. Wearing a cream-white dress and her silvery hair tied back neatly, Carrie leaned her head back as she sat, almost drawfed, in a cavernous armchair. The soft sunlight filtered past the curtains of a nearby window and cast a small ray of light near the arm chair surrounded by semi-darkness. Even the clok on the mantle of the fireplace produced a subdued tick-tock. Carrie, reflected on her "modest life." Fond Memories Gathered around her were her fondest mementoes, pictures of the family and knick-knacks. "I have always been a woman who has stayed on the right side of things," she said with amazing vigor to her voice. And she added shyly, "I've been tempted. But I've taken good care of my character . . . Good Care "A woman who lives to be 100 has taken good care of herself—as she should. "I had wonderful parents. They brought up me and my four brothers and they grew to be old men. "I had one brother . . . as I remember . . . who lived to be 84. And another brother that was 86." Yes, Carrie is 100. But don't take the calendar's word. This Gableite who was born when the North was battling the South in the Civil War and 60 years before Coral Gables was started, is spry and alert. Enjoys Newspapers When her friends don't drop in to chat, Carrie loves to pore over the newspapers and news magazines. And she loves to knit. The 100 years that have passed by have not hindered her eyes. The widow who tripped over her rocking chair and broke her arm at 97 admits frankly she doesnt' feel 100. And if she could flip back the pages of time, she would still live life as she has.

It Takes A Bat To Kill A Bat
Probably taking a lead from the old adage to kill poison with poison, Police Officer Martin P. Ryan got rid of a bat which flew into a Gables home Saturday by using another kind of bat. Heeding an urgent call from Mrs. Barney Morris, of 1253 Andalusia, shortly after 1 a.m., Ryan found the bat flying around her parlor. Sizing up the situation, Ryan acted quickly. "I took hold of a bat and destroyed the creature," he said.
