DRIVER EDUCATION is an important part of the curriculum at Southwest High School... / At Southwest High / Early Instruction Is Key To Training Good Drivers

DRIVER EDUCATION is an important part of the curriculum at Southwest High School and determined to make good, safe drivers of the students is Lewis Swezy, who does the instructing. Behind him are two, student-driven vehicles as they cross the huge, paved "classroom." Dressed in white and wearing a pith helmet is assistant instructor Ted Bouyoucas in the background. Wearing sun glasses to shield his eyes from the sun, the man pivoted on his feet and studied the eight cars moving in a ring around him over the paved area. His voice broke the still morning air. "Son, you've got to signal when you bring the car to a stop!" A few moments passed. His eyes settled on another car and against the voice pierced the air. "You're going too fast, son. Slow down!" Your life could someday be spared, thanks to this man, his "alert" eyes and his eager students. Driver Education This was the Driver Education program at Southwest Miami High School and the man was Lewis Swezy. The semester-long program of classroom instruction on safe driving and behind the wheel experience is designed to prepare students for the time when they join the 71 million motorists in his country. "We lead them one step at a time," explained Swezy. "Next week, we'll have them doing figure 8's. Then we'll go into parallel parking. "Eventually, they'll merge what they've learned." He pointed to the paved area next to the school and said with pride, "All the experiences you have on the street, we have right here." All of the 10th graders at Southwest are required to take the class as part of their physical education course. Swezy and two assistant instructors, who work for the School Board, are teaching "the right way" to drive in eight sleek cars leased by the Board. "Classes" are held on a huge paved area. About six students will enter each car and practice driving—each taking a turn behind the wheel. Motor Age "I think it's a great idea," said Swezy. "For the balance of your life, you're going to be driving a car because we're living in a motor age." While he spoke, the cars—sunlight flashing off the fenders—slowly slipped across the paved "classroom." "Each individual is different," Swezy pointed out. "Some might have a difficult time steering. Another might be too hard on the brake. Sometimes one of them wants to go too fast. Some have trouble with parallel parking . . . especially the girls." In the past two years, 17,766 youths 16-19 have been involved in car accidents in Florida, said Bill Wellons, safety director for the American Automobile Association. And Swezy, Ted Bouyoucas and Charles Albury will have these statistics in mind as they guide their students along the road to safe driving.

Statewide Program / West Lab Pupils Get Dental Check

About 90 pupils at West Laboratory School bared their teeth last week at a visitor and their parents will be glad they did. The children were having their teeth checked by a dentist. Dr. Bernard Neuwirth of the Dental Health Association checked the teeth of kindergarten pupils and other children who are now at West Lab. A blue card stating the condition of each child's teeth and recommended care will be given him to take home to his parents for their consideration. "This program is part of a state-wide program," explained the principal, Dr. Glenn Thomas. Dr. Thomas pointed out that West Lab is one of six Dade County schools taking part in the dental checkup. Dade Demonstration Elementary in Coral Gables is the only other area school involved in the dental survey. "The reason for making the survey," said Dr. Thomas, "is to find out the attack rate of the dental caries (cavities)." "They examined to find out the total number of permanent teeth decayed, the number of them missing and the teeth that had to be taken out because of dental neglect."
