'Dial-a-Crime' system established in Gables

By ERICA MEYER Staff Writer Coral Gables Crimewatch leaders are delighted with the new tape recorder that allows them to telephone the police station and listen to a daily, pre-taped litany of recent crimes. Crimewatch area and neighborhood captains pass the list down the line through their block by block telephone chain so that residents know what current problems are and can be alert and aware. Police information officer Dennis Korokiewicz makes the tapes, based on daily police reports, each Monday through Thursday morning. The detective division is responsible for making the weekend tapes. The only question remaining now about the operation of the new device is: how public will the public information line be? Koronkiewicz and some Crimewatch leaders have said that they do not want the general public calling the crime-list tape. Koronkiewicz said he wanted to "maintain the integrity of the Crimewatch telephone chain. If everyone could call, you wouldn't need the chain." Mrs. Monroe Miller, of Arvida Parkway, a Coral Gables Citizen's League activist who is also a Crimewatch captain, said the number "shouldn't be given out to everyone. The chain wouldn't work if you did that. "We thought the machine would be a great idea," she said. "We went to the City Commission and asked for it especially for the purpose of Crimewatch. If everyone could call, you couldn't get through." Mrs. Lucille Stadler, of Riviera Drive, also a Coral Gables Crimewatch captain, said she thinks the machine was a great idea. "I think the machine will be strictly for Crimewatch people," she said. "We don't want the criminals to know what we are doing. There could be a leak." One Crimewatch organizer, Joan Haas, of Coral Gables, would like the information line to be public, however. "I'm public. I'm not different just because I'm in Crimewatch. People need to know what's happening and they can't always find out," she said. "A police car pulled up next door to me a few days ago and I called the Police Department to see what was happening," Mrs. Haas related. "I told the desk sergeant I was from Crimewatch and asked him 'will you fill me in?' He said 'no' and hung up on me."
