Water rate hike: 40¢ more on average bill
By ELIZABETH OWEN Staff Writer Douglas Bahner complained that in spite of his efforts to contact General Waterworks about his apparently miscalculated water bills, he has gotten no relief. His bills keep going up, he said, while his water pressure keeps going down. "They don't seem to be able to read the meter," said Bahner, who lives at 6130 SW 27th St. "They keep giving me a series of estimated water bills. "And during morning and afternoon high-usage hours, my pressure is just not what it should be - you don't open two taps in the house at the same time." Bahner is particularly concerned because he operated a photographic darkroom out of his home, and must often run water constantly. Bahner was one of a large crowd who showed up at South Miami City Hall for a public hearing before the Dade County Water and Sewer Board, Wednesday, July 14. After the day-long hearing, the Water and Sewer Board approved an eight per cent interim increase, which will bring in $464,000 in added revenue for the utility. General Waterworks had requested a 50 per cent increase. What the eight per cent increase means is that the average homeowner, who uses approximately 10,000 gallons of water a month, will pay about 40 cents more than he did on his last bill. Before the figure was decided upon, a good number of irate South Dade citizens voiced their complaints. "I think it's awful," said Georgie Baker of Coral Gables. "I got to have water. I can't afford it, but the bill has to be paid." Suzanne Litrak, who also lives in Coral Gables, said the quality of her water leaves much to be desired. "When I open my faucet, it's like drinking out of a swimming pool," she said angrily. "There's so much chlorine in it. We should be able to get water that tastes good and is beneficial." An elderly woman who waited her turn for the microphone received cheers from the audience after she spoke. "The water is not fit to drink," said Mrs. Rebecca Crist, of 6551 SW 39th St. "I don't even cook with it ... I buy my water. "I only use the washing machine twice a month, if that much ... I use a pan to wash my clothes. "The water's rotten, and my bills keep going up, up, up. They just want the extra cash to pay for the sewage for other people." Mrs. Jenny Norris, who lives at 5999 SW 44th Terr., chimed in: "I have lived here 30 years, and the water is bad. It has chemicals and sediment in it, and it smells."
