Kendale gardeners blossom with awards

The Village of Kendale Garden Club recently won a first-place and two runner-up awards given by the state. For planting trees on SW 107th Avenue, from Kendall Drive south of 104th Street, the club won the Donnelly Memorial Award ($100) and a trophy to keep for the year. For relandscaping Kendale Boulevard, the club won the $175 "Hands" award from Sears, Roebuck and company. For planting Royal Poinciana and Tabebuia trees, also on SW 107th Avenue, the club won another Hands award from Sears. In addition, the Village of Kendale Garden Club won a third-place award from the Council of Garden Club Presidents for programs at their meetings last year. Adele Gatlin, a club member who lives at 9331 SW 104th Ave., said the club's programs at the monthly meetings include Bonsai, ferns, landscaping, flower arranging, house plants and a number of crafts. "We will be continuing our work with the Division of Youth and Family Development and also the Snapper Creek Nursing Home," she said. "This was a very rewarding experience for all and greatly appreciated by everyone." She said that one of the club's major projects for the coming year will involve Kendall Drive. "We hope to have four median strips in front of the Village of Kendale entrance landscaped by early fall," she remarked. "We are in contact with state and county officials concerning the area." Ms. Gatlin added that the club will have a membership tea in September, and that any resident of the Village of Kendale is welcome.
