Decorating hobby results in gracious, innovative home
By ERICA MEYER Staff Writer Gail and Ken Mase made a hobby of working on their house — and the result is a gracious home with innovative accents. The Mase's have lived in their Coral Gables house for almost eight years. Ken explains that the house was built in 1928 and that many of the fine details — wood banisters, a cedar linen chest, that stucco walls — had been painted over by other occupants. "We've done things to add charm and character," Gail said. Alterations to the house have created an entrance hall for the front door and a carport at the back of the house. The former carport area, an overhang, has been enclosed to create a sunroom. Gail walks into the sunroom, where plants abound behind the large glass windows that now fill the arches where cars used to park, and says, "This is everyone's favorite room". No wonder. The sunny room is furnished in the palest of peach tones. Two loveseats, covered in soft plaid with strips of pale blue, icy green and peach sherbert hues, plus a matching armless chair, form a conversation area. Behind them, a chrome and glass etagier holds souveniers of the couples' many travels. Two wicker chairs sit at a pale orangy-pink Parson's tables. The circular black wrought iron chandelier is also a travel souvenier. Ken, a Braniff airlines pilot who flies to South America found it in Chile. Other lamps in the house also are products of his travels, as are a number of small, decorative mirrors — like the two intricate ones with many gold-framed facets that hang in the sunroom. You could never guess that the two main arched windows in the sunroom are only five feet from the house next door. Ken erected a western red cedar panel the full height and width of the windows about two feet away from them and filled the outdoor gap between the panel and the house with exquisite trees, bushes and hanging plants. Special spotlights make the lanai area even more dramatic at night. The other sunroom windows also look out on plants and gardens, including a brick patio that runs the full length of the back of the house. A wrought iron table invites outdoor dining on the patio and the abundant plants speak of many hours of gardening efforts. Gail, a Realtor-Associate with the Klock Company in Kendall, did her own decorating and selected the pale peach tones for the sunroom. Her next project, she says, is the living room. She likes the primitive art in the room and the natural textures of the tile floor and stucco walls, but wants "to bring it together." The attractive room now sports a beautifully carved wooden desk, an open fireplace, a comfortable sofa and, among many other decorative Latin American accents, an antique copper milk can from Argentina. The entrance hall that leads in to the living room has much the same South American flair, with red tiles on the floor and down South art objects surrounding the piano. . piano.
