1,200 to be interviewed on bus needs

By ANA MARIA ALVEREZ Staff Writer About 1,200 Coral Gables and Southwest residents will be personally interviewed starting next week to determine the community's transportation needs. The Florida Department of Transportation and the Dade County Office of Transportation Administration (OTA) is conducting a marketing survey throughout the area formerly served by the City of Coral Gables bus system. "We know a lot about people who ride buses, but we don't know too much about people who don't ride," said Frank Silverson, OTA spokesman. "Through this survey we are trying to get those people who don't normally travel by bus," he said. The area under study is bounded on the north by SW 8th Street, on the easy by SW 27th Avenue and Biscayne Bay, on the south by SW 112th Street, and on the west by 87th Avenue. There are approximately 55,000 homes in the area under study. Every 50th household was chosen at random for the survey by a computer, using a land use file that the county maintains. Those chosen to be interviewed, with the exception of apartment dwellers, should have already received notification of the survey by mail. Nine county interviewers will be knocking on doors beginning July 19 to ask residents all about their transportation needs. The data should be analyzed by the end of September or beginning of October. "The survey questions are basically to find out how people travel, where they travel, how they get to work, number of people in the family their ages, economic backgrounds," said Silverson. "We hope that we get as good a cross section as possible so that we can determine what transportation needs exist in this area," he said. OTA also hopes to compile data on the needs of handicapped residents in the area, as well as the needs of school children through this survey. Silverson said residents should be aware of the fact that all interviewers will carry Dade County identification cards, which will be presented to all residents being interviewed at home. In addition, South Miami, Coral Gables and Dade County police departments have all been notified of the survey, which is expected to take anywhere from six to eight weeks. If the head of the household is not home when the interviewers arrive, they will leave a note and try again at another time, he said. "We plan to interview people who ride buses in this area within the next few months," he said.
