Bicentennial living rooms have strong British accents
The classic designs of the colonial Georgian period are usually chosen for a Bicentennial living room created by interior designers. The Georgian period (1714-1830) was much inspired by the creations of famed English cabinetmakers Thomas Chippendale (1718?-79) and George Hepplewhite (unknown date to 1786). It saw colors moving from the dark robust tones of early colonial years to softer but still vigorous reds, blues, greens, coppers, golds and natural earth color backgrounds. Paneled walls of the era can be faithfully reproduced in the Bicentennial living room by using hardboard panels. The easily installed hardboard panels blend beautifully with the woodgrains of the period furnishings and fabrics. The adaptable coloring is accented by antique glazing over careful reproductions of aged wood effects. The minutely accurate design is given a welcome modern touch in its easy-maintenance characteristics. Unlike the wall scrubbing chores of yesteryear, the durable hardboard paneling can be cleaned with the sweep of a damp or sudsy cloth. Against this setting of early elegance, a camelback sofa, made popular in Chippendale designs and adaptations, is the focal point of the room. It is covered in the wool-on-natural-linen look of the floral crewel embroidery pattern developed in the early 1700s. From the same early Queen Anne period comes the inspiration for the aproned tea tables. It is notable for the elegant cabriole legs carrying out the subtle cyma curve (double S) design which graced much of the era's furniture. The high-armed side chair shows the low curve of the Dutch cabriole leg. Though the corner cabinet was popular throughout colonial times the one chosen for the Bicentennial living room is definitely Georgian in its clean classic lines. Hepplewhite's influence is shown in the long-lined reeding design in the arms and back of the desk and side chairs. Room accents The room is accented with worked silver pieces and matching Staffordshire-type figurines. The brilliant floral patterns of colonial-type vases show the great influence Oriental designs had on artists of both England and early America. Tones of copperware are picked up in the burnt orange drapes and chair covering. Like its early American inspiration the room is notable for its openness, practical adaptability and durability: qualities that give it a lasting, easy-to-live-with classic charm.
