Moon disciple is preaching Divine Principle here in SD

By ELIZABETH OWEN Staff Writer The Unification Church — a Christian organization whose state headquarters were moved to Miami in 1974 — is beginning to spread its roots in South Dade. Fourteen full-time staff workers operate the church at 5625 SW 62nd Ave., and some 20 other people serve as associate members. Jim Fleming, State Director of the Unification Church in Florida, said the church was founded in 1954 by Rev. Sun Myung Moon, a man who received a revelation known as the "Divine Principle." "The Divine Principle is a revelation about the purpose and meaning of Christianity and the way that God is calling us to prepare for the second coming of the Lord," said Fleming. "Since 1954, it has been taught to people in Korea, Japan, Europe and America. "The Unification Church is a Christian organization that goes beyond the denominationalism of the past. We feel that this is the time God is calling the people to come together on a worldwide scale." Fleming said that the established in Florida after Rev. Moon gave three speeches in Tampa. The state headquarters were moved to Miami in June, 1974, when the church had a "Celebration of Life" festival at Gusman Hall. "Since then, we've been working mostly with young people and with the relationship between the Unification Church and the denominations of Christianity," the director explained. "Our purpose is not to be a denomination, but to be a place where people can meet each other, regardless of race, religion, sex or age. The church's most recent project, said Fleming, was attending the bicentennial "God Bless America" festival at Yankee Stadium in New York recently, when they were part of the Unification Church's choir of 1,200 voices. Staff members from South Dade also were part of the clean-up team which worked through the night to prepare the stadium for a New York Yankees baseball game the following day. Fleming said that the local branch of the church actively participated behind the scenes in the production, and Rev. Moon spoke to some 40,000 New Yorkers. "Now that we've returned, we're eager to let the people in Miami hear the message," said Fleming. "Especially in this bicentennial year, we feel that America must give her third century for the purpose of God and that the American ideals of freedom of religion must be shared with the whole world." Fleming was a research scientist at the University of Washington in Seattle when he was invited to attend one of Rev. Moon's speeches more than two years ago. "I found that the Divine Principle explains so much about the relation between science and religion that I was able to take all my training and use it as a lecturer for the Unification Church," he said. "Rev. Moon's message is a new message of hope, a message that we have to all work together and demonstrate the sacrificial spirit of Jesus for the Jim Fleming
