• Three men on the Coral Gables Board of Architects are able to decide whether or not the home you intend to build is suitable to see the light of day in the City Beautiful. Well, yes, that sounds logical. After all this is their job. Somebody has to decide what's good and what's not so good. But wait a minute. After having presented your plans to these men with the discriminating eyes, and having those plans turned down for being "too contemporary," it would seem logical to ask, "What's too contemporary?" The only real ordinance pertaining to what a home may or may not look like, is that it must be Mediterranean architecture or must be of "classical or similar harmonious architecture." That's it. Well, that could mean a plethora of things to a potential home builder. And by the same token, what may be too contemporary to one group of architects on a board may not be to another. So let's define the terms more clearly, gentlemen. It will save you time as well as the prospective new home owner who, it seems, must now revise his plans over and over again until they meet the somewhat nebulous standards of three men.
Request in line
Among requests which have been made by the Coral Gables Police Department to be included in the city's 1976-77 budget, is an extra youth resource officer for Coral Gables High School. The school which, at one time, had two resource officers, has had only one in recent months. Now, City Manager J. Martin Gainer has indicated that not only will he deny the request but is considering eliminating the one officer that is now there. He says it is not the city's responsibility to provide security officers in the public schools. Perhaps not a responsibility but certainly an advantage. Can anyone estimate how many kids, who are befriended by these youth officers, stayed out of trouble? Can anyone predict how many students will get into trouble for the lack of these officers? We think that after school officials, parents, police and students have their say, it will become abundantly clear that the city manager will be forced to think twice before removing these dedicated officers from the school.

camera comment
Photo by ELIZABETH OWEN There has been a telephone number scribbled on the exterior wall of this half-constructed house on Galloway Road for some time. The number belongs to a South Dade woman who can't understand how it got there: "Mi esposo es un pescador y yo no tengo nada que ver con ninguna casa." (My husband is a fisherman and I have nothing to do with any house.)
people poll Everybody diets -- what's your favorite?
"I eat all the basic foods, but I eat small quantities and I don't eat between meals. I'm always fighting weight gain." Whitty Wetnick SW Area "I have a little cup of Cuban coffee in the morning, a hamburger patty or a piece of bread with ham for lunch, and a steak and egg for dinner. That's all." Renato Gonzalez Fonseca Avenue, CG "My diet is a low-starch diet — no fatty foods, chocolate, french fries or bubble gum. I don't eat all the stuff my dermatologist tells me to stay away from." Sherry Siflinger West Miami "If I gain too much weight, I stick to a high-protein diet and drink lots of water. To maintain my weight, I cut down on beer and eat a balance diet. But my weakness is french french fries." Kris Ackermab SW Area "I avoid desserts — that's about it. Other than that, I eat about everything I want. When I need to lose weight, I eat only steak and water." Tom McManmon Coral Gables "I take my vitamins in the morning, and then I eat whatever I want without being a glutton. Most people have to diet because they never exercise ... I jog my dog in the evening, and I built myself a kayck just for the exercise." Bob Pasawicz Coral Gate
