entertainment / Invitation to dinner... and murder / movie review
movie review... erica meyer | The more familiar you are with the great stars of detective fiction, the more you will enjoy Neil Simon's Murder by Death. The plot is inconsequential, but the character development is a delight. Truman Capote, as rich eccentric Lionel Twain, has invited five of the world's great detectives to his spooky mansion for "dinner and a murder." They arrive through a fog-choked woods, over a rickety bridge, to a doorway where concrete gargoyles fall frequently and where the doorbell sounds like a piercing, terrorized scream. Twain has staffed the mansion with a blind butler, Bensonmum (impeccably played by Alec Guiness) and a deaf-mute maid (Nancy Walker) so he is in complete control. The unfolding of that control is simply a souffle, an hour-and-a-half shaggy dog story with campfire ghost overtones. The real pleasure of Murder by Death comes in with the guests in Twain's creepy mansion. Only Sherlock Holmes escapes being wittily, prettily and thoroughly spoofed. Nick and Nora Charles (The Thin Man), Hercule Poirot (from Agatha Christie - in Murder on the Orient Express), Miss Marple (also Christie - Murder at the Vicarage), Charlie Chan and Sam Spade (you know, Humphrey Bogart) are all present and accounted for. David Niven and Maggie Smith are the Charlestowns, complete with terrier and West Palm Beach manners. James Coco is Milo Perrier, as Belgium as Poirot and as portly as Cannon. Elsa Lanchester is as I always imagined Miss Marple to be, though her character is named Miss Marbles and is accompanied by a wheelchair-bound nurse. Peter Sellers is Sidney Wang and is given to comments like "There is a deadly snake in the room. Wake me when he comes near the bed." And Peter Falk out-Bogies Bogie and gets annoyed when his girlfriend, Eileen Brennan, steps on his Casablanca lines.
