Mase home
From Page 2H living room which feeds into a central hall. To the left is the sunroom, straight ahead is the dining room and kitchen and to the right is the staircase leading to the second-floor bedrooms. The dining rooms polished wood table is set off by an antique yellow highboy which Gail restored and a large landscape painting which the Mase's purchased on their honeymoon. Tiny yellow porcelain roses in the center of the table pick up the color of the cabinet and the glow of light in the painting. Dark wood swinging doors, topped with decorative spindles, lead to the kitchen - another room the Mase's completely redecorated. Ken repainted the glass fronted cabinets, one of Gail's favorite features in the old home. Gail selected a geometric fabric in black, brown and beige softened with a white background and used it for curtains and for cushions on two tall wicker stools. A laundry room and guest room were created off the kitchen as part of the couple's redecoration efforts. Upstairs (after you admire the wooden banister railings, now relieved of their paint and restored to a high-gloss wood shine), you reach the master bedroom which offers a cool retreat from the summer's heat. Pale blue shag carpeting covers the floor in the bedroom and the small adjoining sitting room. A cool floral fabric in white, green and blue has been made into a quilted bedspread, sofa pillows and curtains. "I don't even like blue," Gail confesses, "but this is a heavenly room." Her favorite part of the room is it's outdoor balcony which can be entered only from the bedroom. The balcony is shaded by a tall tree (planted the day the Mase's moved into the house) and looks down on the quiet street. The Mase's two son's Kevin, 12, and Jeff, 9, used to share a bedroom, but a guest room was recently coverted for Kevin and he got to select his own decor. He picked a boldly patterned brown and white geometric bedspread and Gail, using matching sheets, made decorative cushions for the head of the bed and for the chairs in the cozy room. Kevin also has a desk and an eye-catching lamp with a sculptured cork base. Jeff, who now reigns over the room the brothers used to share, lives surrounded by red, white and blue. A cheerful lindowpane-check pattern covers two twin beds and the windows. A Bicentennial hanging on the wall depicts the American eagle and the color scheme is united and calmed by a dark, navy blue plush carpet. Kevin had his picture taken in front of the Bicentennial hanging when he won an American essay contest at Coral Gables Elementary School. Asked to summarize their house, Ken and Gail just look at the lovely rooms and smile. "This was my hobby for a long time," Ken said, "and now it's just about done. I guess I'll have to take up golf or tennis or something. We've got the house basically the way we want it." Son Jeff's bedroom sports a bicentennial color scheme. The patriotic tapestry above the bed took on even more meaning when brother Kevin won an American essay contest recently.
