On Sunset Drive Police station opens in South Dade
By KAY SEVERINSEN Staff Writer In spite of a leaky air conditioner, a new police station has opened in South Dade. Headed by Captain Robert Windsor, the station opened for business Monday at 6 p.m. It is located at 7707 SW 117th Ave. The station's 93 police officers will patrol the area bounded by Sunset Drive on the north; Coral Reef Drive on the south; the bay on the east and the Dade County line on the west. In addition to the patrolmen, the force includes 15 sergeants, six lieutenants and the captain. The majority of the new staff had been assigned to other stations while the new building was being completed. "Their positions were budgeted for," said Windsor. "So They were hired on as extras for the other stations." The building was begun early this year and Windsor has been coordinating the transition of staff to the new facility since March. "It's all part of a long program to improve police services throughout the county," he said. And he says everything has been going smoothly except for the air conditioning, which wasn't disposing of its condensation properly.
