Tis' the season to bazaar. From egg cartons to Christmas trees
By KAY SEVERINSEN Staff Writer Who can turn eight greasy tuna fish cans into a beautiful Christmas decoration? Who can turn egg cartons into Christmas trees, a son's old shorts into a barbecue apron, eggshells into works of art, Handi-wipes into miniature suits of clothes? The good fairy? Well, maybe she can, but the hundreds of women in Dade county who make bazaar merchandise don't need her. They can do it all themselves. 'Tis the season to bazaar, and for months local clubs and churches have been busily sewing, gluing, spray painting and embroidering, all for the benefit of athletic clubs, retarded children, new church sanctuaries and a host of other good causes. "This is traditional bazaar time, between Halloween and the week before Christmas," says Elaine Mills, who is public relations chairman for the Council of Garden Club Presidents. Her council holds a craft workshop every year, with new ideas for bazaar crafts. Why do so many women spend so many hours making beautiful things to give away? "A lot of people just like to do it and their homes can absorb only so many craft items," said Mrs. Mills. We call them Christmas nuts. If you asked them to give $25 to a charity, they would never do it. But if you asked them to spend $25 on materials for crafts items that will sell for $75, they will go wild." Most of the women who are active in bazaar work do not work outside the home, Mrs. Mills believes. "Many, many man hours go into the bazaars. They are a fun way to keep a group active and a way for friendships and fellowship to develop. Only the few people who are in charge have the headaches. In many of the clubs says Mrs. Mills, all the women will get together and work on one particular craft. Who buys the crafts once they are displayed on a bazaar table? "Usually it's the other members of the clubs," laughs Mrs. Mills. "Or its members of the school (if it's a PTA's bazaar) or the church, or the club members, friends. Some people get addicted to bazaars like other people do to garage sales." If an item doesn't sell, says Mrs. Mills, sometimes it is reduced. If it still doesn't sell, it is usually returned to its creator. "Some people take it from bazaar to bazaar til it sells. You never know where your market is." The women of the South Miami Woman's Club agree that it is all a real good time. They have been getting together for about two months to make crafts for this Saturday's bazaar. "If I want a decoration for myself, I just make an extra," says Jean Minden, of 7770 SW 120th St. "I made this decoration for $2.36 and it will sell for $5." She holds up a tree-shaped arrangement of ex-tuna fish cans that have been sprayed gold, lined with velvet and stuffed with miniature Christmas characters. Esther Battinger (r) shows two customers a hanging planter, one of the many items she has on display.
