Some tips for making stuffed toys, doll clothes

When Santa and his helpers sew, they often find themselves working on little things for little people, such as stuffed toys or doll clothes. These are important gifts, fun to make, and the following little things really count when it comes to making them look truly professional. A neatly-finished edge, for example, makes doll clothes look like a million. To handle those quarter-inch-wide facings without frustration, begin by staystitching on the fold line. Clip the curved facing allowance to this line on arm holes and necklines. Press the self-facing to the wrong side, using the staystitched line as your guide to neatness. Topstitch to secure this self-facing, perhaps including a dainty trim as you go to make the edge fancy as well as neatly finished. needles and pins ... nadine wright personality. Stuffing the toy is the most critical stage. Use tiny amounts of stuffing, no larger than a walnut. Larger clumps of filler, no matter how well hidden in the interior of a toy, tend to remain clumps forever. Eventually they are shifted about, en masse, and create limp areas. To coax the stuffing into tiny or a hard to reach places, work from the outside of the toy with a T-pin. Carefully avoid poking a pencil or knitting needle from the inside of the toy, because it can easily make a hole right through to the outer fabric. Any stuffed toy meant for small children or meant to be cuddled and used, rather than just for show, should be made of all washable fabrics. Sew eyes on, using a button on the inside to reinforce the outer feature, just as if you were putting a button on a man's overcoat. Washable stuffing, such as polyester fiberfil, can be washed and dried many times and never lose fluffiness. When Santa's finished making his list and checking it twice, you'll surely have presents to wrap for all the little ones you know. Another key to making great-looking doll clothes is the nothings you select. Small beads can be used for decorative buttons, resting on top of the functional snaps which close the garment. Scraps of lace and braid can be enough to trim an entire doll's garment. Stuffed toys and dolls can call for a little fussing for best results. The trick to professional looking toys that make the difference in the final appearance is to trace every sutitching line, very carefully, with dressmaker's carbon paper and a tracing wheel, to provide a precise stitching line, for example. Those little curves and subtle features are what gives a toy its

GM will tour show at schools

By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer An air bearing platform that can be used to move 1,000 pounds with fingertip ease and synthetic rubber produced in only 60 seconds are just two of the dramatic demonstrations area high school students will see when the "Previews of Progress" program takes place next month. Sponsored by General Motors, the visual and live assembly program was originally established in 1937 to combat the widespread feeling that continuing technological advancement was limited. "Basically the purpose of the show is to get students interested in science and engineering," said John Kincaid, a member of the GM public relations staff. Christopher Columbus High School will be the first school in the area to view the 45-minute fastpaced presentation which tells a dramatic story of energy conversion techniques, pollution abatement techniques, space navigation and other scientific advancements. Previews of Progress demonstration will be held at Columbus on Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. The program, presented by two GM lecturers in nontechnical language, will be at Miami Palmetto High on Dec. 6 at 10:30 a.m.; and at Palmetto Junior the same day at 1:30 p.m. At South Miami Senior High the GM teams will make their educational presentation on Dec. 7 at 9:45 a.m. and at South Miami Junior High at 1:30 p.m. On Dec. 8 the students at Parkway Junior will view the show at 9:15 and 3:15 p.m. Southwest Miami Senior High students will see Previews on Dec. 9 at 10 a.m.; and the team will be at West Miami Junior High on the same day at 2 p.m. Coral Gables Senior High School students will participate in the national assembly on Dec. 10 at 9:30 a.m. The Previews team that appears in Dade is one of six units now touring the country. The team will continue to appear at area schools in January and February and perform 70 shows and a total audience exceeding 60,000.
