Lewis of London Not your usual nursery furniture
By DOROTHY STEIN Staff Writer You've just spent a small fortune filling your dream house with dreamy furniture, and now, with Junior on the way, are you going to settle for baby furniture that looks any less dreamy? At Lewis of London, which opened last month at 5861 Sunset Dr. in South Miami, children's furnishings are as sophisticated and unique as any you would put elsewhere in your home ... and probably more exclusive. No pink and blue bunnies decorate the cribs and dressers at this store, most of which are European imports, and available nowhere else in the United States except at Lewis of London (including their two branches in New York). Available instead are cribs of solid brass, those of contemporary Scandinavian design, wicker, even one that amortizes your investment by later turning into a youth bed. The three attractive young owners - Cathy Grossberg, Ronni Kornreich and Myrna Silver - decided that there was a definite need for such a store in the South Miami area, where there are so many young couples constantly moving in, with good taste and the means to satisfy it. Since Cathy had previously been a teacher, Ronnie a designer, and Myrna an interior decorator and "professional mother," the women felt that their combined talents would make such a venture a "natural" for them. (Myrna still uses her decorating experience by designing children's rooms free of charge to Lewis of London customers.) Not all the items in the store are exclusive or European, Cathy explains. "We carry every line of children's furniture, and what we don't have we can order... and match anyone else's prices. "Also," she adds, "everything can be personalized in this store, since we have most of our things made especially for us, such as wall plaques, measuring sticks, pictures, tables and chairs..." Also available at Lewis of London for the well-appointed nursery are rocking chairs and toy chests of fashionable rattan, a "racing car" bed on wheels, lucite-and-macrame hanging shelves, hand-painted signs featuring the children's names, personalized director's chairs ("one of our best sellers"), and custom-made rocking horses, hippos, and elephants. And, of course, toys... the kind that don't self-destruct after a week of hard use. Lewis of London boasts sophisticated nursery furniture for the sophisticated kid. Left, owners Ronni Kornreich (l) and Cathy Grossberg sit on a racing car bed and below Jamie Robins tries a rocking hippo for size. Photos by DOROTHY STEIN

A love of dancing leads to beauty title
By KAY SEVERINSEN Staff Writer Brenda Aiello, 12, of 4301 SW 84th Ave., likes to dance. Which is one reason why she entered the Junior Orange Bowl Queen contest. All contestants go to the Junior Orange Bowl Ball. But even if she didn't get to go to the Ball, she says she still would have entered the competition. The winners ride in the Junior Orange Bowl Parade, and that's what Brenda wanted to do the most. So it was really exciting for her when she made cut after cut during the preliminaries and the final judging. And it was even more exciting when she was selected as one of the two princesses who will reign over this year's Junior Orange Bowl festivities. Brenda has been entering contests for a long time, she says and went to national competitions for the Cinderella Girl title and Our Little Miss title. So when several of her friends decided to enter the Junior Orange Bowl Contest, she did, too. For the preliminaries, the 72 contestants modeled a short dress on stage before judges then answered two questions. "My first question was, 'If I could have any pet in the world, what would it be?' I said a lion or a bobcat, because they are cute and cuddly." Her second question was, "Why do you want to be Junior Orange Bowl Queen?" She answered, "Because I would be proud to represent the City of Miami and because she gets to ride on the float." Brenda Aiello She must have impressed the judges because they selected her and one of her friends to compete in the finals, which were held last Sunday, Nov. 21. There she went through the same routine, but this time was asked only one question, "How old should a girl be before she starts babysitting?" "I said, 'Fourteen, because at that age they start caring about other people," she said. When the judges had narrowed their decision to six girls, things got really tense, Brenda said. "We were all sitting at one table together and we were holding hands tight." One of Brenda's good friends Kim DeMyer of Hialeah, was chosen as queen and Brenda and another girl were princesses. After the contest, they all went out to a restau-rant to celebrate. Friday, the girls opened the Junior Orange Bowl festivities at the Coral Gables Youth Center. The next big event is the parade and the ball afterwards. Brenda says that because she is in the court, an escort has has been provided for her. "They choose them from private schools," she says. "They're all right, I guess," she shrugs.
