Gables bowling team downs Springs

By STEVE DAVIDSON Gables High Correspondent Since the football, cross-country, and water polo seasons have been completed, there is a temporary lull in Coral Gables High athletics, except for bowling playoffs which will be held soon. Zenia Boeri leads the girls' bowling team which finished its season undefeated by defeating Miami Springs in the season finale. They finished with 10-0 record which left them atop the G.M.A.C.'s south central division. The playoffs begin next week, and they play, as if now, an undetermined foe on Dec. 6. The boys have not fared as well, as they finished the season with a 7-3 record and are eliminated from the playoffs. But, they have been assured of second place. David Snodgrass has bowled consistently well all season, and maintains the highest average on the team. After a two week lull in athletics, the season will pick up for many teams in December. The basketball season begins on Dec. 3, and the Cavaliers hope to rebound from a 6-16 record from last year. Coach Lennie Rosenblouth is still faced with last year's dilemma — the lack of heighth on the team. But, one problem that will not have to be faced is last year's team lack of experience, as the juniors and sophomores have profitted from a year of playing on the team. Also, the J.V. season starts on the same day as both teams play at South Miami to face the usually tough Cobras.

Columbus stages jamboree to begin basketball season

By JOHN CALLAHAN Columbus High Correspondent Christopher Columbus High School's basketball players brought their uniforms out of mothballs and participated in a preseason basketball Jamboree held in Columbus' gym Wednesday, Nov. 24. Columbus played Coral Gables and South Miami. Coral Park also participated. The uniforms had plenty of rest after a very successful '75-'76 season. Last year Columbus won the Southern Division GMAC title and numerous other honors. Columbus' '76-'77 basketball program can be as tough as last year. Two of three junior starters from last year's squad will return. Pedro Busse, and outstanding guard on Columbus' title winning team will not return. He was sidelined by two knee operations. Pedro was an honorable mention All-County guard last year and will be deeply missed. The other two returnees, seniors Caesar Odio (6'4") and Paul Girten (6'3") will compose the nucleus of the team. Both possess outstanding shots and have tremendous rebounding ability. Joining them will be a host of juniors from last year's Junior Varsity. Namely Brian McCutcheon, Alex Dominguez and Jim Thomas. 6'4" tall and should provide added rebounding strength as forwards. Brian will provide an added scoring threat and excellent play making ability. Joining these players will be senior guards Ralph Ribero and Paul Lindeman, who should see plenty of action. Rounding off the team are juniors Jorge Areces, Jim Manahan, Filipe Prellezo and Albert Trelles. The lone sophomore cager is Scott McHugh. The team eliminated its first game jitters in the Jamboree. Columbus de- feated Coral Gables in the second quarter 22-16 and lost a squeaker to South Miami in the third quarter 17-19. Columbus opens it's regular season at home Friday, Dec. 3, against Miami Beach.
