CG Carnival nets $12,000

Despite area competition and a disagreement with carnival ride operators, the Coral Gables High School Band Boosters carnival netted approximately $12,000 last weekend, according to John Hanskat, publicity chairman for the Boosters. Hanskat cited the South Miami High School carnival, the Homestead rodeo and the boat races at Marine Stadium as possible competitors, resulting in smaller crowds than anticipated. In addition, the Boosters' agreement with the ride contractor stipulated 20 rides, but only 13 were provided. "We had good crowds Thursday night and we had a good pre-sale on tickets, but by Friday night all the kids wanted the Sky-Diver, the Himalaya and the merry-go-round, all the rides we didn't get," reported Hanskat. Though the Country Store booth, which included a flea market, made good profits, the Boosters still had quite a bit of clothing unsold, which Coral Gables High School Key Clubbers distributed to migrant workers. Proceeds from the carnival will help fund a band trip to Italy during spring break. The band will perform in concert in Venice, Naples and Rome under the auspices of the Performing Arts Abroad agency.

Special meeting called to discuss Biltmore

Coral Gables residents who have anything to say about the future of the Biltmore complex will get their chance at a special meeting to be held Thursday, Feb. 3, at 1 p.m. The City Commission planned the special meeting in an effort to decide what alternatives can be presented to the residents of the city on the April ballots. Among the alternatives that will be discussed are the tearing down of the massive historical building, restoring the site via private enterprise, letting the structure stand the way it is now, or restoring the first two floors of the Tower building with the issuance of necessary bonds to complete the project.
