‘Princess’ play not up to snuff

Usually at the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, 235 Alcazar, Coral Gables, both children and adults can enjoy the updated, upbeat renditions of classic fairy tales penned for the Playhouse by owner Ivan Kivitt. But in the current production, a musical adaptation of "The Princess and the Pea," Kivitt not only fails to capture the magic of the original Hans Christian Andersen story, he drags out his own adaptation of the plot to a yawn-producing hour and a half. The audience gets a preview of the lackluster musical numbers with the opening song, which basically outlines the story of the sensitive princess and the pea. As an audience member remarked, "That's the story, now what?" What follows is a thoroughly predictable story line tracing the efforts of the crabby Queen Agrivaine's court in finding a true princess for Prince Dauntless the Drab (Kivitt, at least, hasn't lost his touch for colorful names). Told by a wizard to search for "a lily growing in mud," the court indeed tracks down a true swamp princess, though she's found lacking the social graces. Seal Griffin plays the tomboy princess as the only well-rounded character in the play. The rest of the fine cast is wasted, including Playhouse star Danny Mason as Prince Dauntless, in flat, stereotyped roles. "The Princess and the Pea" fails both as entertainment and as a showcase for Kivitt's well-trained troupe. CLAIRE ORTALDA
