Childbirth at home It can be a 'peaceful' experience

Linda Wilson gave birth to Amy in the privacy of her home. By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer The cost of childbirth at hospitals is one of the reasons why some couples choose to have a baby at home. But for Linda Wilson of Coral Gables, having her third baby in her own home was more than just a savings. "It was a very peaceful and spiritual experience to have my baby in my own house, in my own bedroom and with my family," said the 32-year-old mother. With help from her husband, Linda gave birth to an 8 1/2 pound baby girl, Amy. Because of consistent pre-natal care and professional guidance throughout her pregnancy, Linda had no complications when she gave birth to her third child. Shortly after Amy was born, the couple headed for a nearby hospital to make sure everything was all right. They were back home within two hours. "I believe childbirth at home should be an alternative every woman should have," said Linda, a childbirth educator. "It is not for everyone and I do not advocate unattended childbirth at home," she said, adding that 95 per cent of the women have normal childbirth and would be able to give birth at home with the proper training and pre-natal care. "I feel having a baby at home gives back to the family the responsibility of birth," said Linda. "Many people are frightened at the thought of having a baby at home, but the most responsible people are those choosing to do so-that is if they have the proper training and know the risks involved and how to handle any problems that may arise. "The least responsible people are those who give up the responsibility of childbirth by surrendering it to someone else in a hospital," said Linda. Because of the training and planning involved in childbirth at home, Linda said the experience becomes more meaningful for the mother, the father, the other children in the family, and ultimately, the infant. "When I had my other two children in a hospital, I gave birth and then they put me to sleep. I wasn't able to hold the babies for a long time. It is de-humanizing and there is a sense of loss you can't even describe," she added. Linda prepared for childbirth at home by reading extensively, and one of the books she read is entitled "The Home Birth Book" written by Charlotte and Fred Ward. One of the contributing editors to that book is Tonya Brooks, the founder and president of the Association for Childbirth at Home International (ACAHI). Brooks, a registered lay midwife, will give a lecture and show films on Friday, Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. at the Downtown Miami YMCA, 100 SE Fourth St., at 8 p.m. Ms. Brooks' discussion will include the medical, psychological and sociological aspects of childbirth at home. In addition to a film of an actual home birth, a question and answer period will follow the lecture and film presentation. Admission to the program if $2.50 and the public is invited to attend.
