Gables wrestlers finish fourth
By STEVE DAVIDSON Gables High Correspondent The Coral Gables High wrestling and soccer teams regained some of their lost confidence, as they both performed well over the past week. The boys' and girls' basketball teams continued to hover around the .500 mark, as they both went 1-1 during the past week. The wrestling team finished fourth in the G.M.A.C.'s Southern Division tournament at Killian behind David Johnson (149 pounds) and Frank Zagarino (170 pounds). Johnson won the championship in his weight class by the virtue of a 5-2 victory in the finals. Zagarino had to settle for second place, as he lost a 9-6 decision in the championship match. In the tournament for the entire G.M.A.C., the Cavs came in a respectable sixth out of a field of 17. This time, Johnson suffered his first loss of the year, as he came in fourth. Julio DeParis (159 pounds) came in fourth, while Zagarino and Luis Carillo (141 pounds) came in third to pace the Cavs. The soccer team finally broke out of a scoring slump, and whipped South Dade 4-0. These four goals contrast the one goal the Cavs have managed to score in its last three previous games. Mike Stephenson registered a hat trick to lead the scorers, as the Cavs increased their record to 6-1-2 and maintained their second place standing in the southern division. The basketball team had another mediocre week as they beat South Miami, but were defeated by Southwest. The Cavs came back from a 15 point defecit, but their rally fell just short, as two free throws sealed the defeat by a score of 46-41.
