Biorhythm: It's double critical days you have to watch

By KAY SEVERINSEN Staff Writer Employes at Crossly Window Company in Miami have been getting this note in their time slots lately: "Your computer bio-rhythm chart shows that you need to take extra care today to avoid errors or accidents." Some were frightened by the note, some threw it into the wastebasket, scoffing, but others were extra careful in their work. The window company hasn't had any accidents at all since they employed Stefan Smith, a biorhythm specialist, five months ago to set biorhythm charts on all 500 of its employes. Before then, they averaged three accidents a month. Smith, a Coral Gables resident, has been doing biorhythms professionally for a year. He learned the technique from George Thommen, who, Smith says, is the leading biorhythm expert in the world. "People think bio-rhythm is akin to astrology or something like bio-feedback. They expect little machines," Smith said. But it is quite unlike either, and is based on mountains of research on the intellectual, physical and emotional cycles that everyone experiences, Smith says. All three cycles begin at birth, Smith explains, when the person is at a "triple critical level." That is, all three cycles are crossing the 0-line on a biorhythm chart, causing trauma. From that day on, the three cycles fluctuate from high to low. A physical cycle, research indicates, lasts 23 days, and affects strength, resistance to disease, physiology, coordination and endurance. The emotional cycle runs 28 days and governs sensitivity, mood, nerves, cheerfulness and creative ability. The intellectual cycle, a 33-day period, regulates memory, mental alertness, logic and reasoning. Of the three, Smith says the intellectual cycle is the least important cause of accidents. "Several years ago I had a bad accident and I was hospitalized for a while," says Smith. "Later I did my biorhythm chart for that day and discovered that it was a double critical day for me." That means two of his cycles were crossing the 0-line simultaneously. Smith also does bio-rhythm chart for United Airlines employees. The charts are then made available to each person to use as he wishes. The airline sets no policy concerning them. But Swissair, another airline, will not schedule two pilots on the same flight if they are both having critical days, Smith says. "Ted Kennedy took his dip (in Chappaquiddik) on a double critical day, Judy Garland overdosed on a critical day, so did Marilyn Monroe. And Clark Gable had a heart attack on a critical day," Smith added. Stefan Smith of Coral Gables is a biorhythm specialist who computes biorhythm charts for various Miami companies.

Clogging: rock to bluegrass

By MIRIAM LESNICK Correspondent Around and round they go, stamping their feet. As the music gets faster, the sound of tapping feet gets louder and louder. More than 50 people, young and old, gather every Monday night at South Miami Legion Hall to stamp their feet to the rhythm of bluegrass music. They are clogging. Clogging is an old dance form which originated in Europe and was brought to the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina by early settlers. Cloggers, wearing comfortable shoes with taps on their soles, move in a circle stamping their feet to the sound of the beat. Colleen Convey, who learned to clog in North Carolina four years ago, began teaching 10-week clogging classes two years ago at South Miami Legion Hall. The classes are taught every Monday night. "Clogging like everything else requires a lot of practice in order to be good at it. I clog because it is a dance where I can have fun and exercise at the same time," Mrs. Convey said. As she called out instructions, all cloggers listened attentively and followed every step she took. Everyone looked tired but continued to dance until the last beat of the music was heard. Edward Warford, a veteran clogger of three years, danced his way out of the circle and explained why he clogged. "The dance entails a different type of music with a different type of beat. I feel it is a dance with its own identity-it belongs to the United States. Before I started clogging, I was a buck dancer but later decided that clogging took more skill and was more of a challenge to me."
