Auto larcenies up Burglaries, robberies in Gables down from '75

The number of burglaries and robberies in Coral Gables dropped considerably during 1976, although the number of auto larcenies increased. Burglaries in Coral Gables last year numbered 836, as compared to 974 in 1975, said Capt. Charles Skalaski at the Coral Gables Kiwanis Club luncheon Tuesday. Robberies, or crimes against persons, dropped from 86 in 1975 to 51 in 1976. Larcenies from automobiles increased from 274 in 1975 to 527 last year. Skalaski attributes this increase to the greater number of CB radio equipment in cars. The figures given by Skalaski were to support statements made by the guest speaker at the luncheon, former Gables Chief of Police William Kimbrough. Kimbrough, who retired as chief on Dec. 31, after 31 years as head of the department, said a reduction of the police department personnel would be disastrous to the city. "When I first came to Coral Gables George Merrick told me his intentions were to build the most beautiful city in Coral Gables, a safe city where children could go from the first grade to the university without leaving it," said Kimbrough. "I too had a dream. I thought was an opportunity to build the best law enforcement agency in the country," he said. "So for 31 and a half years I directed the police officers to treat the other persons like they would like to be treated." Kimbrough said he objected to a recommendation made in a recent survey of the police department, suggesting that the force be cut back by 12 per cent. "It is an asinine recommendation and it could ruin the finest police department. "If those recommendations come to pass, both George Merrick's dream and my dream will turn to nightmares," he added. The Kiwanis honored another long-time employe of the city on Tuesday. Former City Clerk Loretta Sheehy not only received a plaque, she got a standing ovation. The Kiwanis sang "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" to Miss Sheehy for her 51 years of service with the City Beautiful.
