Gables Bar Association sponsors speech contest in high schools

The Coral Gables Bar Association will sponsor a speech contest for the students of Coral Gables Senior High School. A companion contest will be conducted at Ponce de Leon Junior High. The topic for this year's contest is "What I would do as a legislator." The Bar committee in charge of this project believes the topic will give the student the opportunity to explore and understand how legislation is created and how it applies to daily life. Members of the Bar will judge the elimination rounds and the panel of judges for final speeches will be made up of distinguished members of the community, including judges and legislators. Judging will be based primarily on the students organization and structure of the presentation. Delivery of the speech will also play a major factor in judging, although judges will also look to the choice of and adherence to the topic selected as well as the appropriate use of language. The first prize for the senior high winner is $100 United States Savings Bond. The eliminations for Gables will start Feb. 24, and the finals will be held March 9 at the school. The details of the junior high contest have not yet been worked out. All students who are interested in applying to participate in the contest should contact their English teacher, or Mrs. Bunny Gillan, who teaches at both schools. The first and second prize winners of the senior high contest will be the guests at the Bar Association luncheon in March, at which time they will present their winning speeches to the members.

Another contest

The City of Miami Ecology and Beautification Committee and the Sunset Elementary School Chorus will kickoff "Fight Litter Month" at a luncheon to be held on Feb. 11 at noon in the Columbus Hotel. As part of the drive, the committee is launching a three-fold program within the local private and public schools. Students will be eligible to win a 10-speed bicycle as grand prize in the Fight Litter Contest. Any interested students may use any fight litter theme, and any medium to express their ideas on a poster no larger than three feet by four feet. Entries must be submitted to school offices no later than Feb. 25. The other two school campaigns are the "Pitch in and Pick-up" litter drive on school grounds during the week of Feb. 22-25, and a "Neighborhood Cleanup" day on Feb. 24.

Training session planned

"If you feel good about who you are, you've usually got it made," says Dr. Stephen A. Mack, a South Dade psychotherapist. Dr. Mack would like to get people involved in helping some school children who don't "have it made," because nobody ever bothered to make them feel good about themselves. Dr. Mack serves as professional volunteer to the "Listen to Children" program in the schools, which is jointly run by the Mental Health Association of Dade County and the School Volunteer Program. "It is not an uncommon situation in the public schools to find students who are acting up in various kinds of deviant and aberrant ways," Dr. Mack says, "particularly when they are not receiving the attention needed at home, as well as in the school surroundings." Many of these "problem" children may simply need to talk to someone who cares enough to really listen to them, which is what the "Listen to Children" program is all about. Dr. Mack will be conducting training sessions for responsible adults who are interested in volunteering as "listeners," on Feb. 8 and 18, at 8:45 a.m., at Bel-Air Elementary School, 10205 SW 196 St.
