Youths Arrested, Charged In Thefts
One youth with a long record of juvenile offenses and another boy were picked up by Coral Gables police Monday and charged with breaking and entering and grand larceny. Det. Sgt. E. H. McGough identified the duo as Charles Flynn, 20, of 3733 Park Ave., Coconut Grove, and Lance Jopson, 17, of 911 Anastasia Ave. Both were to be bound over to Criminal Court for prosecution. McGough said that Flynn and Jopson were picked up after police had received a tip that the youths had goods stolen from Gash Music Company, 2000 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Sunday. Police found nine guitars, four amplifiers, several other musical instruments hidden between the ceiling and roof of a building at Flynn's home. The goods were valued at more than $2,800. Flynn later brought in skin diving gear, including tanks, breathing apparatus and other items, which McGough said were taken several months ago from Skin Diving Supply Co., 229 Alcazar Ave. These were valued at $684. Flynn was driver in an accident which brought death to one of his teen-age passengers a few years ago.
Gas Station For Giraldo Is Approved
(Continued from Page 1) and building variances. All variances must be approved also by the City Commission. Only Zoning Board member Gerard Pucci cast a negative vote Aug. 7 when other members Chairman Phil J. Laurence, John Junkin, Paul H. Hinds and Sam Silver voted for approval. The commission, however, in approving the request, made some changes in the Zoning Board's recommendations. Commissioner Evans, in moving for approval, modified the request by insisting that a four-foot wall be constructed on the south and west sides, that end pumps be eliminated and that the roof be extended to cover the pump area. The zoning change involved reducing the existing CB (commercial) classification, which permitted the tire store, but not the station, to CC, a lower commercial classification including gas stations. Attorney Henry Simmonite appeared in behalf of the Elks Club to ask for a deferment of the item, but the three-man commission went ahead in the absence of Commissioners Joe Murphy and C. L. Dressel Jr.
Aerial Shots Of City To Aid Survey
Weather permitting, Coral Gables will be shot from the air this week to provide aerial photographs to be used in planning the City's future. The huge photos which eventually will result, will be used by Rader Associates in studying such problems as the location of high rise buildings and possible rezoning of certain areas to permit different usage. Rader has between 90-120 days to complete a survey and study of the city and come up with recommendations. The City Commission recently approved a $12,000 contract with Rader for the study after controversy over high rise buildings and other zoning problems. Between 15 and 20 various reports relating to zoning and planning had been turned over to Rader for study.
Nearly Doubled Ad Budget OK'ed by CG Commission
By MAURICE LABELLE Times Reporter Some City Commissioners indicated they did not "get a bang" out of the new advertising program presented to them Tuesday, but the $56,000 plan was approved nevertheless. Under the proposal presented by Bishopric, Fielden Green, the city will spend less than had been proposed — $71,000. Nevertheless, it is large increase over the first year's program in 1960-61 when $30,000 was spent. A last minute move to have a $15,000 television advertising appropriation restored failed, but the Commission approved the expenditure to be incorporated in the $56,000 total. Under the plan recommended by the advertising firm, the Advertising Committee and Bert Burris, city consultant, newspaper advertising would have received $26,000; radio $30,000 and television, $15,000. Radio and newspapers will now have to share with TV. A one-year sponsorship of the Ralph Renick Channel 4 evening broadcast is entailed. Actually 26 alternate weeks are involved. Former mayor Fred Hartnett, a member of the Advertising Committee, gave strong support to the proposed plan. Hartnett described the plan as one suited to the city's 35,000 residents and also to the men who do business in Coral Gables. Jack Green, Karl Bishopric and Burris outlined the details of the proposed program to the Commission. Seven basic themes, similar in nature to the "mood" commercials and advertisements presented last year, were explained. They are: Back to school, which ran last week; Youth; Christmas Shopping, Business, Commercial and Professional Opportunities; Cultural, Easter Shopping; and Residential Pleasure. Bishopric told the Commission that thousands of feet of movie film would be shot as background for the TV commercials. But Commissioners George Wilson and Franklin Evans indicated some reservations and Mayor Robert L. Searle had some ideas of his own to add. Wilson indicated the program was too sophisticated and might not be reaching enough people. "This sort of advertising doesn't send me," said Evans. "I don't get a bang out of it." The mayor suggested that a directory of all services and businesses should be added to the program.

Safecrackers knocked a hole through the roof at Giffen Industires, 4221 Aurora St., sometime before 6 a.m. Aug. 12 and made off with between $500 and $1,000, according to Coral Gables police. The burglars forced open two safes by ripping metal covers, knocking out concrete walls and smashing the locking mechanism. Det. Don Clermont said that several of the company's offices were also rifled by the thieves. The money was taken from a petty cash box in a safe.
