In Canada / Curtis Haley Organizes Eskimos-as Boy Scouts
The Curtis Haleys sent us the following recently after a story in the Times about Troop 43, the Gables' oldest Boy Scout unit and sponsored by American Legion Post 98. "Prior to Mr. J. R. Greenway becoming active leader of this troop our son, Curtis W. Haley, returned from active duty assignment with the Air Force in Newfoundland and was Scoutmaster of this troop. "They became a very active group, earning their badges and awards. They competed very favorably with other troops in this area. "He became very busy with University work and family and unhappily relinquished his leadership of the Scouts. "To make a long story short, but one in which I am certain Troop 43 members who remember their former Scoutmaster will be interested, Lt. Curtis Haley USAF is commanding officer of an Air and Airways Communication Service at Frobisher Bay Airport, Baffin Island, Northwest Territory, Canada. "Among his extra curricular activities he set up classes of school work for boys who dropped out of school at an early age but now wish to complete their education. "Lieutenant Haley has a degree in education from the University of Miami. "But, this is the other interesting thing; he formed and has received a charter for a Boy Scout Troop of Eskimo boys. It is the first Troop in the Eastern Arctic. "He has received recognition from Boy Scout Headquarters and a new patch has been designed for them which will be used for other Arctic Troops. "A whale is in the foreground, an iceberg behind the whale and yellow and gold of a setting sun in the background. "Lt. Haley's wife and three children are in Fairmont, W. Va. until he returns in September. "I am certain that when he visits here before reporting to his new station he would be happy to visit Troop 43 to tell them of the Eskimo Scouts. "The temperature was 50 degrees and 60 degrees below zero much of the winter. Dark or dusk much of the time and also too light to sleep and the men use black out curtains at the other seasons in the land of the midnight sun." HALEY
