Let it Howl, Southern Bell Is Ready
Southern Bell Telephone Co., heartened by the way its communication lines stood up during Hurricane Donna last year and satisfied with its prompt restoration record, is polishing plans to cope with any possible storm this season. Donna knocked out only about 10 per cent of Greater Miami telephones. Several hundred additional phones went out due to high water in the hours following the hurricane. But the combination of emergency power and underground cables protected by air pres- re, kept the majority of telephones working throughout the storm. Repair crews from as far away as Missouri came to South Florida to help repair damage, mostly in the Keys where microwave radio links had to be set up to span the storm-damaged areas between Key Largo and Marathon. In all, nearly $2 million worth of hurricane damage was done to Southern Bell facilities in the state. With the lessons of Donna on the company books, Southern Bell is ready for any big blows during 1961. Supplies are stocked when a storm approaches. Immediately after the high winds subside, engineers with sectional maps go into the maged areas and draw in facilities in need of repair. Telephone crews work "round the clock to splice in new cable, restoring aerial wires and setting new poles as needed."
WISE WORDS
That man that hath a tongue, I say, is no man, if with his tongue he cannot win a woman — Shakespeare.
"GEMS and FACETS" as presented by Mr. CARROLL
as presented by Mr. CARROLL TV Lecturer, Gemstone and Diamond Authority, Member American Gem Society. "Quotes" from recent TV shows HOW IS YOUR Diamond made? Funny question you think, because we all know that nature created every diamond eons ago by heat and pressure. But what we refer to is the amount of skill and care and fine craftsmanship used to fashion your very own diamond to the exact standards which will bring forth its greatest beauty and fire. In the trade this is called "make". And just as a fine tailor makes a suit better — so does a superior diamond cutter. It is truly hard to believe the great number of "poorly made" stones that are sold these days. You can depend upon Carrolls JEWELERS MIRACLE MILE near LeJeune Rd. * Coral Gables
