Parallel case is the birth of a daughter, Mary Katherine, Aug. seventh, to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Pilafian of 324 SW 30th Rd., their fourth child and first daughter. Mrs. Pilafian, who teaches the third grade at Mer- [?] Demonstration School, and is a subscriber to The Times, said she read of the Stanley Burkes, of 4220 SW 20th Ct., whose fourth child was a girl, and first daughter. Mary Katherine joins brothers, Martin, 10; Jack, 8 and Bobbie, 5. She was born at Jackson Memorial Hospital. ★ ★ ★ [Mollie] (Mrs. M. C.) Michael and her nine-month-old son, Thomas, are visiting Mollie's mother, Mrs. Elizabeth H. Poorman, 944 Andres Ave., and Betty Poorman is getting a great kick out of babysitting with Tommy while his mother sees her old friends. She came also to attend the marriage of her school friend, Ann Brinson of 4255 Braganza [Av]e., Coconut Grove who became the bride of Richard Davidson Hensel of Winston-Salem, N.C., Saturday. The Michaels, who reside in Athens, where Mr. Michael is a professor at the University of Georgia, will be moving to Louisiana, Sept. 1st where Professor Michael will teach at Southeastern Louisiana State, Hammond, La. ★ ★ ★ Now that the new swimming pool is really in business at the Coral Gables Country Club, the members will be having an "Isla Fiesta" come Saturday night. Around the pool 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. will be the first phase of the evening. The planners are Mr. and Mrs. Sam Elcook, Dr. and Mrs. J. N. [T]am, Mr. and Mrs. Homer wnsend, Barbara Binns, Terry Campbell and Leonard Newman. Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Thagard are chairmen of the affair. There will be a Limbo Contest with calypso music. Dinner from 7 to 9 p.m. will be served in the patio, and "Crusty Drybread" and his orchestra will play for dancing. ★ ★ ★ The Coral Gables Chapter, National Secretaries Association International, will hold a luau at the home of member, Caroline Humphrey in North Miami, according to Dorothy Rayner, 131 Antiquera St. The party, which begins at 4 p.m., is the association's annual ways and means project for the year. ★ ★ ★ They found eiderdown on ev-ery berth, bunk and bed in Norway, so Cracker folk Julia and Al Harum are blessing the ducks everywhere. Scotland and then Denmark and the "down" was the only thing that kept them from splintering into icicles, they write. After attaining a kissing acquaintance with their two grandsons, Dayn and Kirk, sons of the Davidson Harums, they will visit more kin of "Best-a-mor," Al's mother who accompanied them, and who admitted that Norway was a bit chilly. ★ ★ ★ Sylvian M. Greene, 1036 So. Greenway Dr., has accepted an appointment as general chairman of the Every Member Canvas for 1962 at St. Philip's Episcopal Church, while Mrs. Winston W. Wynne, 6300 Castaneda Ave., has been named general chairman of women's work for the parish Spring Fair. ★ ★ ★ They'll wear Mayan and Mexican costumes Sunday at the Dupont Plaza Hotel's Skyroom, when Alianza Interamericana headquarters 1022 Salzedo St., and the Mexican Consulate, present Maya Princess Nicte Hatin songs and dances. Cocktails will be served from 5 to 8 p.m. Proceeds are to benefit World Committee on Employment of the Handicapped. ★ ★ ★ Ever smiling and kidding Sgt. James C. Powers, of the Coral Gables Police Department, is still fighting an eye infection which has kept him out of uniform since mid-June. Powers hopes he has the bug about licked, he said, and that he will be back on duty in the next few weeks. ★ ★ ★ Woman Marine Lance Cpl. Elaine V. Hopper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merle C. Hopper of 604 Ponce de Leon Blvd., completed the junior women officers training course (WOTC), Aug. 4, at the Marine Corps Schools, Quantico, Va. ★ ★ ★ Joanne Harris of Chicora, Pa., was one among 14,000 members of the Luther League of the American Lutheran Church attending the recent convention held at Miami Beach, who had a relative in Coral Gables. Joanne is the granddaughter of William E. Harris Sr., who has an apartment at 88 Almeria Ave. Mrs. Maude Collins, also of 88 Almeria Ave., and a native Floridian, gave Joanne a luncheon while she was here. Her father, W. E. Harris Jr., incidentally invented the rustproof oil now used in the U.S. missile bases. ★ ★ ★ Mr. and Mrs. John Watters of 3001 Segovia St.; their daughter, and family, Dr. and Mrs. G. W. Quinn of Akron and their two daughters, Karen, 13, and Jane, nine; also their son, Charles J. Watters, 1222 Sevilla Ave., and Mrs. Watters, their two children, Carol, 13, and John, nine, joined forces for a family reunion in Bryson City, N.C. Now back, John Watters said they had a fine time in those cool Carolina mountains know as the nantahalas.
