UM Retreads 40% Who Once Failed
DR. SPIRER UM Retreads 40% Who Once Failed Over 40 per cent of the University of Miami students who failed to meet the academic standards of the University have been reoriented under a "Program of Guided Studies" and are now holding their own as passing students, said Dr. Jess Spirer before the Rotary Club Friday. Dr. Spirer, director of the Guidance Center of the University, is a new member of Rotary. It is customary that a new member give a twominute "vocational talk" explaining his job so the members understand his occupation. In his talk, Dr. Spirer discussed the Program of Guided Studies, which began three years ago under his direction. The University is systematically making available intensive instruction in course material and the professional inseling services of the Guidance Center to students enrolled in the program. Failing students have been permitted to continue in the University by entering the program. A three-credit course in study methods is part of the program. Lectures, conferences and special help in regular academic courses are feated in the course. Major emphasis is on reading and composition. Dr. Spirer resides at 612 Catalonia Avenue.
