Refugees Entertain Polarians

Strains of "Granada" drifted out of the main ballroom of the Coral Gables Country Club last Friday afternoon after the Rotary Club's weekly luncheon meeting. Over 100 business and professional men, Rotary Club members and guests, gave a standing ovation to Consuelo Lindler, Manuel Ledon, Ariel Remos and Julia Salome. They are Cuban refugees now affiliated with the Greater Miami Opera guild. All were prominent opera singers before they left Cuba. Rotary President Frank Keryke introduced the group. They were conducted and accompanied by Dr. Paul Csonka, associate conductor of the Opera Guild under Arturo DeFilippi. Born in Vienna, Dr. Csonka was conductor of opera of Pro Arte Society in Havana, professor of conservatory, guest conductor of Havana Philharmonic, and assistant conductor of Havana Philharmonic. He received his Doctor's degree in music from New York College of Music and served as assistant conductor of Chicago Lyric Opera, and professor of Louisiana State University. Under his direction the group sang ten well known Spanish songs, among them "Granada" and "Siboney."

Seen & Heard

Times reporter Becky Doyle-Quinn was a guest at the Gables Kiwanis Club last week and blushed when they sang a special song to her, "Let Me Call You Sweetheart." The club's bulletin this week noted her appearance: "Becky Doyle-Quinn was with us and I do mean, 'Nice!' Hope she can be with us every week until she goes to college."
