Deaths in the Gables John Booth, 68; Once Sought Senatorship

John Parkhurst Booth, 68, Republican standard bearer in the Senate race against George Smathers in 1950, died Sunday. The Coral Gables attorney lived at 2617 North Greenway Dr. He came here from Maplewood, N.J., 26 years ago. Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. Philip's Episcopal Church. Cremation followed. Mr. Booth was a past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 471 and past president of the Yale Club of Miami. He was also a Mason, a Member of the Riviera Country Club, the West Indies Sailing Club, the American Legion and the Society of Colonial Wars. Survivors included his wife, Mary Elizabeth; six sons, Richard, John P. Jr., William R., Michael J., and Donald, all of Coral Gables, and Robert, of New Jersey; two daughters, Miss Susan Booth, of Coral Gables, and Mrs. Margaret Piper, of Lock Haven, Pa.

William Brown, Came From Cuba

Funeral service and requiem mass was held Monday at the Church of the Little Flower for William Brown, 87, 1428 San Benito St., who died Saturday. Mr. Brown came here from Havana, Cuba. He was general manager of the Crown Life Insurance Co. Survivors are his wife, Amparo, and six daughters, including Mrs. Kathleen Barturen, and Miss Margaret Brown, both of Coral Gables; and two sons, William E. and Stephen R., both of Miami.

Coco Plum Mourns Loss Of Members

The Coco Plum Woman's Club of Coral Gables lost two of its associate members by death this week. Mrs. Lizanna V. Blanton, of 1637 Tigertail Ave., died Monday. The other was Mrs. Grace V. Rolfe of 100 SW 31st Rd., who died while vacationing in Black Mountain, N.C. Mrs. Blanton, who came here in 1914, was the wife of Judge W. Frank Blanton, who has been a judge for 43 years. Mrs. Rolfe, 75, was the widow of Merle H. Rolfe, founder of Rolfe Armored Car Service. She came here in 1918.

Mrs. Roerig Dies; Here 21 Years

Funeral service was held Wednesday at Van Orsdel's Coral Gables chapel for Mrs. Ida H. Roerig, 81, of 1328 Astoria Ave., who died Monday. Interment was in Woodlawn Park Cemetery. Mrs. Roerig, who came here 21 years ago from Atlanta, was a member of the Coral Gables Methodist Church. She is survived by a son, George Roerig, of the same address, two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and four sisters.

Purse Snatched

A nurse, Aurogo Mercandino, complained to Coral Gables police Saturday night that youth snatched her purse containing small change and personal papers and ran away. Police combed the area around the 2700 block of North Greenway Dr. to find the culprit and questioned some people but the thief had made good his getaway.
